Introduction

A motion detector or sensor is an apparatus that detects moving objects, especially people. Such a device is often incorporated as a part of a system that performs a task automatically, or alerts motion users in an environment. They form a vital component of protection, automatic control of lighting, home control, energy efficiency and other useful systems.

An electronic motion detector requires an optical, microwave, or acoustic sensor, and, in many cases, an illumination transmitter. Nevertheless, a passive sensor only detects a signature from the moving object by emission or reflection, i.e. it can be emitted by the object, or by any sufficiently strong ambient emitter, such as the sun or a radio station. The electronics perceive changes in the optical, microwave, or acoustic field in proximity to the device based on one of the technologies mentioned below. Most low-cost motion detectors can pinpoint ranges up to a minimum of 15 feet (4.6 m). Highly technical devices cost higher but have significantly longer ranges.

Motion detectors find broad use in industrial applications. The activation of automatic door openers in businesses and public buildings is one common application. Instead of a true occupancy sensor, motion sensors are also commonly used to trigger street lights or indoor lights in passageways, such as lobbies and escalators. Energy is conserved in such smart lighting systems by only powering the lights for the duration of a timer, after which the person presumably has left the area. Types of Motion Sensors

Passive Infrared (PIR) Sensors

Microwave Sensors

These sensors produce microwave signals and then measure their reflection off objects to determine whether or not objects move. Microwave sensors are highly sensitive, but these can sometimes be seen in non-metallic objects that can be detected moving objects outside the target range. It consumes a lot of electricity, so those sensors are often built for ON & OFF cycling. It makes possessing them past possible if you know the cycles. Microwave sensors are used by wireless guard dogs.

 

Telegraphic Sensors

Such sensors produce radio waves and sense trouble in those waves. They can notice through walls and objects, and are often placed in a way that makes a net of radio waves covering up large areas. These sensors are expensive, so they are normally used in warehouses, storage units and in other situations requiring a commercial level of safety.

 

Video Camera Sensors

With the widespread availability of low-cost digital cameras able to shoot video, the output of such a camera can be used with operating system to detect motion in its line of sight. This alternative is particularly appealing when the intention is to record video triggered by motion detection since no hardware is needed beyond the camera and computer. Furthermore, it can also be used in conjunction with near-infrared illumination to detect motion in the dark, that is, with the illumination being undetectable by a human eye at a wavelength.
