Todd Howard has revealed a potential surprise release tactic for The Elder Scrolls 6, indicating that a shadow drop could happen. Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls 6 has remained one of the most anticipated games in the entire gaming industry for well over a decade, with leagues of fans worldwide eager to learn more about its launch. As a result, every comment from the developer about its release instantly becomes a hot topic within the community.
Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls 6 back in 2018. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for more updates, though most of the time, they’ve been met with disappointment, as very little has been shared since its initial reveal. However, after the studio shadow-dropped Oblivion Remaster in April 2025, many began hoping that a similar approach could be used for the long-awaited Skyrim sequel. Now, those theories seem to carry more weight, as franchise director Todd Howard has hinted at a possible surprise release.
Oblivion Remastered’s Shadow Drop Was a Test Run, Howard Says
In an interview with GQ Magazine, legendary game director Todd Howard discussed the possibility of a shadow drop for the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6. “It’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear,” he said. Later, when asked if Bethesda Game Studios would consider a surprise release similar to Oblivion Remaster‘s, Howard added, “You might say that was a test run. It worked out well.” While the possibility of a shadow-drop may sound quite exciting for many fans, they may want to keep their hopes low, as Howard also shared some disappointing news about The Elder Scrolls 6‘s development.
It’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear.
Recent reports suggest that The Elder Scrolls 6 is in a playable state, and Howard has confirmed that playtests are ongoing. However, according to GQ Magazine’s interviewer, Sam White, the director wants fans to know that The Elder Scrolls 6 is “still a long way off.” According to the award-winning dev, having a long break between The Elder Scrolls games benefits the studio creatively and helps fans avoid paying for a “plus-one sequel” that lacks originality. Howard has also asked fans to be patient, assuring them that working on The Elder Scrolls 6 is an everyday task for the development team.
Bethesda Game Studios recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of Fallout 4 with a special-edition release. According to Howard, the team has also been busy with Fallout 76 and its ongoing updates. However, these aren’t the only projects on the studio’s plate, as Howard mentioned “some other things” Bethesda Game Studios is working on during his interview with GQ Magazine, without providing any concrete details.
