In response to a problem with their high-voltage batteries, BMW is recalling 12,535 Mini Cooper SE EVs in the United States, according paperwork submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Models manufactured in 2020–2024 between March 2019 and January 2024 are affected by the recall. Owners whose cars may be faulty may bring them to a Mini shop to receive a complimentary software update, which the manufacturer hopes will solve the problem before it starts.
In October 2023, BMW, the company that owns Mini, discovered that a driver of a Mini Cooper SE had suffered a “thermal event.” In early 2024, it discovered another instance that had occurred in Germany. According to the firm, there have been no injuries reported as a result of the battery problem.
Recall papers state that a short circuit may result from defects in the Mini’s high-voltage battery, which can occur for a number of causes.
“This may lead to an overheating of the high voltage battery and, in rare cases, a thermal event, even when the vehicle is not in operation,” BMW wrote in its notification to NHTSA.
In plainer terms, the NHTSA stated that “a short circuit increases the risk of a fire.”
The fix is updating the battery management software on the Mini so that, in the event that a defect is identified, the battery is discharged to less than 30% of its full capacity.
