    Summary

    • Leaked data suggests Weapon Platforms from Modern Warfare 2 may make a return in 2026’s Call of Duty.
    • A leaker recently revealed all of the weapon codenames for Call of Duty 2026.
    • Call of Duty 2026 is heavily speculated to be a new entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare series.

A new Call of Duty leak has fans speculating on the potential return of Weapon Platforms, a controversial feature introduced in 2022’s Modern Warfare 2. The leak comes from a reliable data miner who recently uncovered a long list of codenames for the Call of Duty 2026, which is heavily speculated to be a new entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare series. The codenames appear to share similarities with Modern Warfare 2‘s Weapon Platforms feature, leading some to believe that it may be making a return.

Call of Duty publisher Activision hasn’t even disclosed any information on this year’s entry, but there are already plenty of leaks and rumors surrounding next year’s title. One of the most recent claims made was that DMZ would return with Call of Duty 2026. The extraction-based mode was also introduced in 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 and was similar to the likes of Escape from Tarkov or Gray Zone Warfare. Unfortunately, likely due to the overwhelming success of Warzone at the time, DMZ failed to entice enough players. Support for the mode was then ended in 2023 following the launch of Modern Warfare 3. But with Infinity Ward back at the helm for 2026, it looks like the developer could be taking a crack at DMZ 2.0.

Modern Warfare 4 May Bring Back Weapon Platforms

It’s now looking like DMZ won’t be the only element of Modern Warfare 2 returning in 2026, as fans are now speculating that the controversial Weapon Platforms feature may also be making a comeback. The new system was strongly disliked by most of the Call of Duty community, as it required players to level up individual weapons to unlock their counterpart weapons. For example, unlocking the 556 Icarus Light Machine Gun required players to level up the M4 Assault Rifle to level 19, as the two weapons were a part of the same Platform tree. Now, due to recently leaked information from Reality, some fans believe the system could be making a return next year.

The leaker recently revealed all of the weapon codenames for Call of Duty 2026, but users such as Detonated have speculated that they could mean Modern Warfare 2‘s complicated weapon unlock system is returning. Although this hasn’t been confirmed, nor will it be for a very long time, Detonated pointed out in a separate tweet that some of these codenames were also seen in Modern Warfare 2 for its Weapon Platform feature. However, others, such as leaker Vondyispog, believe the codenames are just references to the real life gun names.

Details on the rumored Modern Warfare 4 will likely be shared closer to the title’s release in 2026, which also means developer plans could change drastically in the meantime. However, recent rumors from a reliable insider claimed that the upcoming Call of Duty game may finally be ditching PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and is even in development for Xbox’s next-gen console. Unfortunately, this year’s Call of Duty title is rumored to be still coming to last-gen consoles, which many believe is “holding the series back” in terms of graphical improvements and new gameplay features.
