Fans can debate all day long on what the best FromSoftware game is since their run of Soulslike games started in 2009 via the release of Demon’s Souls. One that constantly gets brought up as the GOAT is Bloodborne which launched in 2015. Besides some DLC, the game has remained untouched in its native PS4 resolution.

    Best FromSoftware Games For Newcomers

FromSoftware games are known for being challenging and grueling experiences, but some of them are a bit more newcomer-friendly than others.

While it can be played on PS5, fans want to see it ported onto other spaces like Steam or Xbox platforms. Well, while not a direct sequel, it looks like FromSoftware’s latest game, The Duskbloods, will be a close spiritual successor to Bloodborne. Let’s discuss the reveal trailer in detail.

    6

    The Release Window

    FromSoftware Is Cooking

    A character in The Duskbloods

In the Switch 2 Direct, most of the games were confirmed for 2025 with hard dates like Donkey Kong Bananaza and Mario Kart World or teased for later in the year like Kirby Air Riders. Then there is The Duskbloods which is an outlier for more than one reason. The end of the trailer confirmed a loose date for 2026 without any range but after that, an even bigger bomb was dropped.

The Duskbloods is going to be a Switch 2 exclusive which is huge for Nintendo. Not many FromSoftware games have been console exclusives save for Demon’s Souls on PS3 and Bloodborne on PS4. It’s wild to imagine how much money Nintendo could have used to score this deal but maybe FromSoftware are just big believers in the Switch 2’s potential.

    5

    Traversal Possibilities

    From Jumps To Mounts

Riding a mount in The Duskbloods

Some of the wildest things in The Duskbloods trailer pertain to traversal. Elden Ring Nightreign looks like it has some sort of flight features which makes it stand out from the base game besides it being a roguelike. In The Duskbloods trailer, there is an armored character who has a jetpack, so flight may be possible for players here too.

13 Facts You May Not Know About FromSoft, The Studio Behind Dark Souls & Bloodborne

Dark Souls developer FromSoft may have found major success in the 2010s, but few know the troubled, true story of their rise to gaming prominence.

This knight could be an enemy but there is also a shot in the trailer showcasing a character, presumably a player, jumping down from a high wall which could mean flight is still a possibility. Besides taking to the skies, there is a quick shot in the trailer with a character riding a beastly mount. Players could summon a horse in Elden Ring so this mount in The Duskbloods is less surprising than the jetpack but still cool.

    4

    Transformations Abound

    Dino Crisis?

Turning into a T-Rex in The Duskbloods

As if the rocket-powered knight wasn’t wild enough, there was something even zanier. The player used some kind of magic to turn the top half of their body into a T-Rex while still sustaining their human legs. The transformation admittedly looked a bit janky, but in the best possible way that a FromSoftware game can be.

The visuals of this T-Rex were reminiscent of creatures found in Dino Crisis. If Capcom isn’t going to make a new entry in that series for a while, then it looks like FromSoftware has a few ideas in the meantime. Who knows how that power works or if there will be more transformations in the final game, but as of now, it’s fun to think about the potential in The Duskbloods.

    3

    Confirmed Weapons

    From Rings To Guns

    Shooting guns in The Duskbloods

One of the best things about Bloodborne was its weapons. There weren’t many in the game but each one was distinct as they could transform into an alternate mode. For example, the Threaded Cane could be used to attack enemies like a normal cane, or it could transform into a razor-sharp whip.

There were no weapon transformations in The Duskbloods trailer, but there was a character wielding a cane. It seems like players can also wield Chakrams as well as dual-wield weapons like swords. More importantly, guns will play a big role in combat as a machine gun can be seen strapped to a character’s back in one scene and another character is dual-wielding pistols and blasting away.

    2

    Powers Beyond Weapons

    A Psychic Showdown

Lifting enemies with psychic powers in The Duskbloods

Beyond weapons and transforming into T-Rexes, there was one other offensive mechanic in the trailer. A character could be seen lifting enemies psychically and then slamming them on the ground. As far as powers and spells go, this was unique for a FromSoftware game.

As FromSoftware’s Bloodborne has yet to make its native PlayStation 5 debut, these similar PS5 games might fill the void.

There was another scene where the player character was sucking what looked like a soul out of an enemy. The context of that power could be anything. It could be how players regain HP as it seems like vampirism plays a big role in The Duskbloods or it could simply be just another spell. It’s best to leave speculation aside but at least fans know there are powers beyond weapons to wield.

    1

    Multiplayer Integration

    Create A Brood Of Vampires

Two characters walking in a church in The Duskbloods

On the game’s website, FromSoftware clarified that The Duskbloods is going to heavily feature multiplayer. Up to eight players can go online, but it does not say if that means eight players can play cooperatively or if there is a separate eight player mode. The website does note there will be PvPvE though. The trailer doesn’t seem to give any hints at how multiplayer works at all.

There is one scene in a church where a character waves its hand and then another humanoid appears. This was probably a summoned ally and not a real player because the motion was too fast. Plenty of summonable creatures have appeared in FromSoftware games as recently as Elden Ring.
