Whether it’s anthropomorphic fungi or weird bugs with goofy designs, there are plenty of hilarious enemies a player will encounter on their adventures in FromSoftware’s catalog. This list is ranked purely by how funny each enemy is, even if they’re pretty powerful as well.

Basilisks – Dark Souls And Elden Ring

Petrifying Presence

One of the major attractions for a first-time player of Dark Souls is that they never know what they’re going to encounter around the next corner. In the sewers underneath the Undead Burg, players are likely to stumble across their first basilisk, a now iconic enemy that appears in a lot of FromSoftware games.

These strange, goofy creatures look ridiculous at first glance. However, their jumping attacks and petrifying breath are deadly, leading to comedic situations where players can get trapped by letting their guard down. What makes them even better is realizing that their big, bulbous eyes aren’t actually their real eyes (look closer to the mouth to see the true eyes of the basilisk).

Wheel Skeletons – Dark Souls 1 And 3

The catacombs are meant to be a scary place in Dark Souls. It’s where the personification of death lives, and so they are meant to be miserable. It’s a shame, then, that the wheel skeletons are down there too, because they turn a grim atmosphere hilarious at a moment’s notice (while also being one of the best Berserk references in the game).

These goofy skeletons hop on their wheel and speed around the ground faster than an F1 car, trying to trample the player. When there’s a lot of them, it turns into a chaotic carnival of out-of-control skeletons strapped to wheels. They’re hilarious and an iconic part of all the Souls catacombs levels.

Giant Lobsters – Elden Ring

The sense of discovery that all FromSoftware games hold dear has never been more prevalent than in Elden Ring, a truly massive open-world game where yet-unseen creatures can populate entire zones. In Liurnia, a magical realm of mist and mystery, the Tarnished finds… lobsters.

These guys are just straight-up goofy. In a world of dragons, gods, and Lovecraftian abominations, Liurnia’s key enemies being big lobsters is a very funny decision. Though they can definitely pack a punch in combat, particularly from long range, these big lumbering goofballs provide a nice bit of levity in a dark area of the game.

Chair Gunners – Bloodborne

When players arrive in Yarnham for the first time in Bloodborne, it becomes clear pretty quickly that everyone is hostile, including the mobs roaming the streets. Yet, in an iconic moment in the game, players on their way back to a checkpoint near the beginning of the game are confronted by one of these guys, a chair gunner.

They’re clearly meant to be a bit of a joke, but any player who gets stuck in their line of fire will be cut down fast if they’re not careful.

Guardian Ape – Sekiro

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice remains one of FromSoftware’s most experimental games because it shook up the central RPG mechanics found in the Soulslike formula, instead leaning heavily into action game mechanics. No boss embodies that innovative experimental spirit more than the Guardian Ape.

Not only is the Guardian Ape funny because he’s literally a giant monkey who throws his poop at the player, but he’s also one of the greatest trolls FromSoftware has ever pulled off. When the player kills the Ape, they think they’ve won, but the Ape rises soon after in a new, more deadly form, tricking millions of players around the world. It’s almost possible to hear the FromSoftware devs cracking up all the way from Japan.

Emissaries – Bloodborne

Bloodborne, more than any other FromSoftware game, plays with horror imagery and horror fiction to great effect. There are a lot of Gothic and supernatural horror influences on the surface, but the late game leans heavily into cosmic horror full of Lovecraftian monstrosities.

These enemies are not that. The little goofy blue-headed bulbous aliens, officially called Emissaries, run around with their hands outstretched like idiots, and they’re so strangely funny to watch. In a game so attuned to showing horrifying aliens, these guys are a refreshing comedic change of pace.

FromSoftware loves tricking their players. Whether it be with unforeseen traps, clever enemy placement, or using the player’s assumptions against them, it’s always fair to assume that the developers are laying traps for the player to fall into. None is more devious and iconic than the Mimic chest.

Drawing directly from Dungeons & Dragons inspirations, the Mimic chest will devour any player who tries to open it. It’s equally terrifying and hilarious as the Mimic devours the player with their wiggling legs in the air, making hardened FromSoftware veterans always check every single chest before opening them in the future.

The world of Dark Souls is unrelentingly dark. There is misery around every corner and monsters that want to make life hell. Yet, deep in Darkroot Gardens and at the very base of the world are these guys, big anthropomorphic mushroom people who waddle around like they’re in Winnie the Pooh.

That being said, these enemies can do big damage if players let them get close. Even so, watching the little ones waddle around never fails to be funny, and they’re a much-needed bit of comic relief in a world dominated by darkness.
