Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate expansion is more than just a new chapter of the ongoing story; it’s an entirely new era for the franchise. So far, this new era has been a rather bittersweet transition, with many of the things players knew and loved about Destiny 2 undergoing some sudden changes that have surely ruffled some feathers.

Among the long list of recent changes made to Destiny 2 in The Edge of Fate expansion is the end of support for the Gambit game mode. Now, while Gambit was far from the most popular game mode, and its sudden ending could have been seen from a while away in hindsight, this still leaves a big void that nothing has quite managed to fill. Even the new Sieve game mode in Destiny 2, which effectively serves as the replacement for Gambit, despite its strengths, Sieve arguably can’t compete with the likes of Gambit.

Destiny 2 Obviously Needs More Than Edge of Fate to Reignite Its Fire

Destiny 2’s new direction with The Edge of Fate has only just begun, but it’s already met its first major hurdle thanks to one clear metric.

Destiny 2’s ‘Gambit Hiatus’ Leaves a Big Void That No Other Game Mode Can Quite Fill

Ahead of Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate expansion, a TWID Bungie development blog (formerly the ‘TWAB’) broke the sad news that Gambit would be taking a hiatus for the foreseeable future. To be more specific, Gambit is still available to play in Destiny 2, but support for the game mode has temporarily ended, meaning there are no new rewards to earn, nor incentives to play it throughout The Edge of Fate expansion.

Bungie did, however, say that Gambit will eventually make a return with new loot and updated mechanics, but the current state of this game mode is still a sad affair.

Now that it’s on hiatus, it’s admittedly easy to look back on Destiny 2’s divisive Gambit game mode with rose-tinted glasses, overlooking its flaws to reminisce on the positive memories. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a special game mode that was unlike anything else in Destiny 2 by nature of offering an intense blend of PvP and PvE, with competition and combat like no other game modes offer. Hence, the current Gambit hiatus is a significant loss for many reasons, far beyond the surface-level frustration of that pesky Destiny Content Vault striking once again.

Destiny 2’s New Sieve Game Mode is Gambit’s Spiritual Successor

In this new era of Destiny 2 in the Year of Prophecy, Sieve is effectively the replacement for Gambit, at least until Gambit returns. However, Sieve arguably falls incredibly short of living up to the same level of community standing as Gambit ever did in its glory days.

Credit where it’s due, Destiny 2’s new Sieve game mode does deserve some praise for featuring new ways for players to use the Darkmatter abilities on the planet Kepler. Although so far, these Darkmatter abilities seem to be quite hit or miss among Destiny 2’s community, which in turn makes the Sieve game mode equally divisive for its mandatory use of these abilities. So, beyond this, Sieve ultimately does little to distinguish itself from the countless new and returning game modes that are available in Destiny 2’s new Portal activity hub.

Destiny 2’s Gambit Game Mode Set Impossible Standard for Sieve to Compete With

Given all the variety of creative game modes that have come and gone in Destiny 2 over the years, Sieve arguably doesn’t stand out from the crowd. Whereas with Gambit, there’s nothing quite like this activity to fill in the void that it has left now that Gambit is on hiatus. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that Gambit was a one-of-a-kind game mode amidst a sea of game modes that often have more in common than not, and the Sieve game mode arguably doesn’t scratch the same itch.
