Eridium returns as a currency in Borderlands 4, but unlike in previous games, it is arguably more valuable in this one. It’s not solely used to just buy stuff this time around, and players will need tons of it once they reach the endgame.
You’ll likely get plenty of Eridium as you start your first Borderlands 4 campaign, and most players will likely end up wondering what to do with it in the first place. How to Use Eridium in Borderlands 4
Eridium is mainly an endgame resource in Borderlands 4, and it is used to interact with several activities that only become available once players beat the main story. Such activities include:
- Resetting boss fights with Moxxi’s Big Encore
- Respeccing Specializations
- Transferring Firmware from equipment
Moxxi’s Big Encore
Moxxi’s Encore Machines are available even during the campaign, but once you finish the story, you’ll unlock the Big Encore option. Unlike the regular one, Big Encore uses Cash and Eridium. In exchange, the boss you’re about to reset gets a decent boost to their drop rates.
This will likely end up being the biggest Eridium sink in Borderlands 4, as using Big Encore will be the best way to target-farm legendary items from bosses.
Resetting Specializations
Once the endgame starts, you’ll also unlock the Specialization skill tree. This is an additional progression system that works in parallel with the usual leveling system, but instead of getting skill points, you get Specialization points that you can spend on several passive bonuses as well as skills that can turn you into an OP Vault Hunter.
You can respec your Specialization tree at any of the respec stations in the major towns of each region. This will set you back about 5,000 Eridium.
Firmware Transfer
Gear sets have made their way into Borderlands 4, and with the Firmware Transfer feature, you can take the set effect of one item and place it into another. Beating the campaign will unlock one of Zane’s machines found in NPC towns, and you can do all your firmware transferring from there.
Firmware provide players with very powerful effects, assuming players can equip enough items with the same Firmware type. Getting a set effect or two is crucial to the endgame.
When transferring firmware, the donor weapon will get destroyed in the process.
