After six long years, fans have finally gotten a mainline game, Battlefield 6, with a single-player campaign, and they might wonder if it’s worth buying the game just for it. Throughout the releases, the single-player story campaigns in the series have often featured stunning set pieces, a great introduction to game mechanics, and a decent narrative to string everything together in cohesion.

Let’s explore if it’s the same case with BF6, by going over everything the single-player campaign does great, and where it fails to deliver. This list aims to help players decide if they should purchase the game solely for the story campaign.

Reasons for Buying Battlefield 6 for the Single-Player Campaign (Pros)

The Set Piece Moments are Fun

    Battlefield 6 Campaign Set Pieces

Battlefield 6’s campaign immediately throws players into the midst of the action, as a NATO base in Georgia gets attacked by the rogue PMC, Pax Armata. The battle quickly escalates to using a laser designator to blow up their tanks and using C4 to reduce an entire building to rubble.

These set pieces are a spectacle to behold, and remind players why they fell in love with the series in the first place. Without spoiling anything, one of the best scenes involves a moving train, which is on par with some of the best campaign moments from the series.

A Good Introduction to Core Gameplay Mechanics

Battlefield 6 Campaign Core Gameplay Mechanics

Due to the great reception of Battlefield 6’s multiplayer, there will be several players who’ll be interested in the series with this entry. For newcomers, BF6’s single-player campaign is a great place to start. The missions will act as interactive tutorials, teaching new players everything, from basic combat mechanics to using even the more advanced gadgets and weaponry.

Battlefield 6 does feature great level design that will take players from one mission to another, simulating the experience of large-scale battles that are a staple of the series. By the time they finish up with the story, they’ll be more confident jumping into the multiplayer modes and will be able to hold their own.

    Unlock Exclusive Rewards for Multiplayer

Battlefield 6 Campaign Challenges & Rewards

There are several challenges and assignments associated with the single-player campaign mode in Battlefield 6. Completing said additional challenges will unlock exclusive rewards like characters and gear for players to use in the multiplayer modes.

The BF6 single-player mode also features 25 achievements/trophies for players to unlock. This will further incentivize players to complete the campaign and perform certain actions to unlock all the trophies and attain 100% completion.

Why You Should Not Buy Battlefield 6 for the Single-Player Campaign (Cons)

The Story Has a Strong Start, but Loses Momentum

    Battlefield 6 Campaign Narrative

Now that we’ve mentioned everything good about Battlefield 6 SP campaign, it’s time to dive into the bad stuff, starting with its story (spoilers for the first mission only).

The campaign starts with a bang with its first mission, introducing us to a group of soldiers being redeployed right before the NATO base is ambushed. As the battle ensues, they complete their objective and ride off into the sunset. Or so it seems, as they’re attacked and all hope of surviving the danger comes crumbling down with their chopper.

After a tense stand-off against an army of Pax Armata, our protagonist is the only one who survives, but is riddled with survivor’s guilt. This immediately grips players with the story, making them impatient to know what comes next.

However, the game doesn’t do anything of substance with these complex themes, and the narrative shifts to another character. EA also plays it safe with the general narrative of the game, as the antagonist of Battlefield 6, “Pax Armata,” is depicted as geographically ambiguous. The overall campaign portrays the motivations behind the playable characters in the shallowest way possible.

Compared to the single-player campaigns of Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield V, the story in Battlefield 6 leaves players with a sense that something is lacking.

    Bad Squad & Enemy AI

Battlefield 6 Campaign Bad Enemy AI

One of the biggest criticisms of Battlefield 6’s single-player campaign is the enemy and friendly AI.

The enemy AI in general is often buggy and avoids shooting at the players despite having a clear line of sight. You may also be able to see them blink into existence at their spawn point, which completely takes you out of the immersion.

The squad AI, which rolls with you in various missions, sometimes feels overpowered or doesn’t bother shooting the enemy in front of them despite not being engaged. The way friendly AI operates makes the players take a back seat in a game mode where they should be taking the center stage instead.

Reportedly, some players can finish most of BF6’s single-player campaign without even shooting a single bullet, and instead rely on their squad to finish enemies or simply spam the “Engage Enemy” ability when they’re standing still.

    Overly Restricted Map Exploration

Battlefield 6 Campaign Restricted Map Exploration

As each mission has its own set of collectibles for players to find, restricting their movement within maps seems counterproductive. Due to the amazing level design, most players won’t hesitate to stray off the main path for a bit to explore the war-ridden streets and building corridors in search of hidden collectibles.

However, if you move away even a few meters from the objective, you’ll get a huge warning to return to the combat area. Failing to return within five seconds will result in failing the mission and restarting from the last checkpoint.

Sometimes, even your squad AI will drop an ammo box in an area that’ll be off limits, and you’ll have to wait for the objective marker to proceed forward to interact with it. This level of restricting players’ movement can lead to some of the most frustrating moments in the BF6 single-player campaign.

Should You Buy Battlefield 6 for the Single-Player Campaign or Not? (Verdict)

    Battlefield 6 Campaign Missions

Battlefield 6’s single-player campaign consists of nine missions in total, spanning an okay-ish 4–5 hours of playtime. This can either be a pro or a con, depending on how much you like the general experience. But the main question still arises, despite all its great moments and flaws, is it worth buying BF6 for the single-player campaign?

The answer is subjective, depending on which of the following categories you belong to as a player.

    • Mainly interested in solo-play and the single-player campaign: It’s not worth buying Battlefield 6 only for the single-player campaign if you’re not willing to spend any time in the multiplayer modes. The multiplayer is where BF6 shines, and the campaign is a secondary component to the whole game.
    • Someone interested in multiplayer, but loves visual set-piece moments in FPS campaigns: It’s definitely worth buying Battlefield 6, as the game still offers great level designs, stunning set-piece moments, and a pretty cinematic ending. It’ll be a good entry point that will transition you into the various multiplayer modes the game has to offer.

At the end of the day, the decision to buy Battlefield 6 only for the single-player campaign rests on you. The game in general is one of the best the series has seen in a long time, and you’ll make your own fun regardless of its shortcomings.
