The Toyota bZ and Subaru Solterra Get Tesla Supercharger Access

    • The Toyota bZ and older bZ4X, as well as the Subaru Solterra, are gaining access to the Tesla Supercharger network in North America.
    • The 2026 Toyota bZ and 2026 Subaru Solterra come with a Tesla-style NACS port from the factory, so there’s no need for an adapter.
    • 2023 to 2025 models, however, need a CCS1 to NACS charging adapter to use Superchargers. And not everyone will get one for free.

Owners of the 2026 Toyota bZ and 2026 Subaru Solterra electric crossovers can now use over 25,000 Tesla Superchargers in North America without an adapter.

The two battery-powered electric cousins gained access to Tesla’s network of DC fast chargers yesterday, which includes Plug & Charge functionality. As long as there is a payment method set up in the SubaruConnect or Toyota app, drivers can just plug in, and the charging session will begin automatically. Owners will be billed without having to input the card details every time.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that the older 2023 to 2025 Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra don’t support Plug & Charge, so owners will have to use a card or a smartphone app every time they charge at a Supercharger. Furthermore, not everybody will get a free charging adapter.

The 2026 models come from the factory with a Tesla-style NACS charge port, so they don’t need an adapter for Superchargers. However, owners will need an adapter if they plan on using CCS1-equipped DC fast chargers from providers like Electrify America, ChargePoint and EVgo. Older Solterra and bZ4X models come with a CCS2 port, so they need a NACS adapter to use Superchargers.

Toyota said it will provide complimentary adapters for everyone. All 2026 Toyota EVs come standard with adapters that allow owners to charge at J1772 (Level 1 and Level 2) chargers and CCS2 stations. From November, owners of 2023-2025 bZ4X EVs will get a letter from the company directing them to contact their dealer to get a free NACS adapter for fast charging.

The 2026 Subaru Solterra also comes out of the box with two adapters that enable owners to use J1772 and CCS chargers. However, owners of the 2023 to 2025 model will have to pay for a certified NACS adapter, which will become available this fall.

The Tesla Supercharger network has over 25,000 NACS-equipped stalls open for non-Tesla EVs across the United States and Canada. Toyota and Subaru are among the last automakers to gain access to America’s largest DC fast charging network, but they’re not the last. According to Tesla’s website, BMW and Volkswagen are still on the waiting list.
