Motorola has been around the foldable phone scene for a long time, but it has mostly played it safe. Until now, the company has stuck to clamshell designs with its Razr lineup, while rivals experimented with larger, book-style foldables.

That could finally be about to change.

According to renders shared by tipster Evan Blass on X, Motorola is preparing its first book-style foldable, reportedly called the Moto Razr Fold. If these images are accurate, this would mark a clear shift in Motorola’s foldable strategy.

A familiar Motorola look, just folded differently

At first glance, the Razr Fold doesn’t look radically different from Motorola’s recent Edge-series phones. The camera module sits on the left and uses a squircle shape with three lenses and an LED flash. It’s a design Motorola fans will immediately recognize.

The finishes are interesting too. One variant appears to use a carbon-fiber style back, while the lighter model looks closer to faux leather. Both feel very on-brand for Motorola, which has leaned into textured finishes more than most Android brands.

There’s also an extra button on the left side. If Motorola follows the same approach as the Razr 60 Ultra, this could be a shortcut for AI features, possibly offering one-tap access to tools meant to speed up everyday tasks.

A tall, narrow fold instead of a wide one

What stands out most is the form factor. Instead of going wide like the Google Pixel Fold, Motorola seems to be aiming closer to Samsung’s approach. The Razr Fold appears tall and narrow on the outside, with an inner display that looks almost square, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series.

That shape usually works well for multitasking. Split-screen apps, reading, and portrait browsing tend to feel more natural on these proportions. The trade-off is video playback. Most videos will likely show black bars at the top and bottom, which isn’t ideal if you watch a lot of content on your phone.

Stylus support could be Motorola’s differentiator

One potential advantage for Motorola is stylus support. The Razr Fold is expected to support pen input, something Samsung has slowly stepped away from as it prioritizes thinner designs.

The stylus is reportedly called the Moto Pen Ultra and is said to come in Pantone’s Color of the Year shade, Cloud Dancer. If this turns out to be true, it could appeal to users who want a foldable that doubles as a productivity tool, not just a large screen phone.

For now, these are just early renders. But if Motorola does enter the book-style foldable space with stylus support and a familiar design language, it could finally give buyers another serious alternative beyond Samsung and Google.
