While Riftbound didn’t have a super successful launch when it first came out, the game has been getting more attention exponentially in the TCG scene over the past few months, to the point that it closed 2025 with very good sales and player numbers. Now, Riftbound is about to bring even more League of Legends characters and creatures into the mix with its Unleashed expansion, which is coming out in April in Chinese and May in English. One of the best features of Riftbound is that it has carved out its own niche apart from giants like Magic: The Gathering, while remaining mechanically distinct, fun, and true to its League of Legends identity.

Ahead of the launch of the new Unleashed expansion, GameRant was given a new card and its Alt rarity to debut exclusively before they’re added to the official gallery on the game’s website. Akin to trading card games like Lorcana or Magic: The Gathering, Riftbound adopted a color-coded system for its cards to be used in decks using up to two colors based on the chosen Legend character card. Today, GameRant is revealing a Chaos (purple) card for the League of Legends character Kha’Zix, called Kha’Zix, Mutating Horror.

World of Warcraft Producer Has Officially Joined Riot Games, Where a League of Legends MMO is in the Works

Audiences finally get an update on Riot Games’ highly-anticipated League of Legends MMO, courtesy of a former World of Warcraft producer.

Riftbound: Unleashed Officially Reveals Kha’Zix Mutating Horror

Kha’Zix, Mutating Horror is a Champion Unit that can be used in any Chaos decks in Riftbound. This card is an Epic rare; it costs 4 to play, and it has 4 Might as well. Notably, it comes with the new Unleashed ability Ambush, which allows Riftbound fans to play Kha’Zix, Mutating Horror as a reaction in a Battlefield where they have units. Then, it has another ability, which gives it +2 Might when Kha’Zix, Mutating Horror attacks or defends, and there is just one enemy unit on the Battlefield.

Riftbound: Unleashed’s New XP Mechanic Explained

Not only that, but it also gains 2 XP. This is another new mechanic coming with Riftbound‘s Unleashed expansion, and it allows players to build XP as a resource to then spend it. Coincidentally, also from Unleashed, is a new version of this character in Legend form, called Kha’Zix, Voidreaver that is Body/Chaos (orange and purple), and it too uses XP. While Kha’Zix, Mutating Horror doesn’t have a way to spend XP, the character’s Voidreaver version does, as the card can be exhausted while spending 1 XP to Buff a Unit, or while spending 2 XP to move an exhausted friendly unit from a Battlefield to its base.

Additionally, Riftbound‘s new XP mechanic allows players to gain a level whenever they gain XP, and some new cards in the expansion become stronger the higher their level, much like some League of Legends Champions are strong at level 1 and become even better over time. For example, the Champion Unit card called Master Yi, Tempered gains Deflect and Ganking when players have accrued 6 or more XP. On the other hand is Master Yi, Unstoppable, a 12-cost 12-Might card, which has multiple bonuses for different levels.

    • At level 3, Master Yi, Unstoppable costs 2 less and 1 less Power (Calm Rune)
    • At level 6, Master Yi, Unstoppable costs 4 less and 2 less Power (Calm Runes)
    • At level 11, Master Yi, Unstoppable costs 6 less and 3 less Power (Calm Runes)
    • At level 16, Master Yi, Unstoppable cannot be chosen by enemy spells and abilities

What follows is that, even without a spender or levels, Kha’Zix, Mutating Horror can hold its own by gaining more Might and also XP for players to use with other cards. As a 4-cost Unit, this Chaos version of Kha’Zix is a solid Champion card to use, but it remains to be seen if it’ll be a meta pick in League of Legends‘ TCG.
