BSNL recently announced the Indian pricing of the Inmarsat IsatPhone 2, and the figure has surprised many. At Rs. 1,34,166, the satellite phone costs more than several flagship smartphones, including Apple’s latest iPhone models. While the comparison is tempting, the two devices are built for completely different purposes.

Unlike an iPhone or any Android smartphone, the IsatPhone 2 isn’t designed for social media, gaming, or photography. Instead, it’s built to provide reliable communication in places where conventional mobile networks simply don’t exist.

Built to Work Without Mobile Towers

The biggest reason behind the high price is its satellite connectivity.

Traditional smartphones depend on nearby cellular towers to make calls or send messages. Once you leave network coverage or towers are damaged during disasters, these devices lose connectivity.

The IsatPhone 2 works differently. It connects directly to Inmarsat’s geostationary satellite network, allowing users to make voice calls and send SMS messages even in remote mountains, deserts, forests, oceans, or disaster-hit regions where terrestrial networks are unavailable.

This capability makes it an essential tool for defence personnel, disaster response teams, maritime operators, mining companies, and expedition groups rather than everyday consumers.

Specialised Hardware Comes at a Cost

Satellite communication requires far more advanced hardware than a regular smartphone.

The handset includes high-gain antennas, specialised satellite receivers, and radio components capable of communicating directly with satellites orbiting thousands of kilometres above Earth. These components are significantly more expensive than the modems found inside consumer smartphones.

The phone is also engineered to withstand harsh environments. Its rugged construction is designed for extreme temperatures, dust, humidity, and rough handling-conditions that would damage most flagship smartphones.

Production volumes also play a major role. While companies like Apple and Samsung manufacture tens of millions of smartphones every year, satellite phones are produced in much smaller quantities for niche industries. Lower production volumes mean manufacturers cannot benefit from the same economies of scale, resulting in higher prices.

    More Than Emergency Satellite Messaging

Modern flagship smartphones have introduced limited satellite features, but they aren’t direct competitors to dedicated satellite phones.

Some premium smartphones can send emergency SOS messages or share location information via satellite in select regions. However, these features are designed only for emergencies and don’t support continuous voice calls or regular messaging.

The IsatPhone 2, on the other hand, functions like a traditional mobile phone over satellite. Users can make voice calls, exchange SMS messages, and stay connected regardless of whether mobile towers are available.

There’s More Than Just the Hardware Cost

Buying the handset is only part of the expense.

Users must also subscribe to BSNL’s Global Satellite Phone Service, with plans starting at Rs. 3,500 per month for government agencies and Rs. 5,835 per month for commercial users. Since satellite communication is tightly regulated in India, customers must complete strict verification and obtain approval before purchasing or using the device.

    Is It Worth the Price?

For most consumers, the answer is no. A premium smartphone offers far more features for everyday use at a lower price.

However, for professionals working in remote or high-risk environments, uninterrupted communication can be the difference between completing a mission safely and losing contact altogether. In that context, the IsatPhone 2 isn’t competing with an iPhone, it’s offering something smartphones simply can’t: reliable communication virtually anywhere on Earth.
