We’ve all seen the headlines by now. At least, every tech enthusiast has. The news in question here is how Apple’s first-ever foldable smartphone is coming apart barely hours after ownership for some people. Even though Apple is replacing these smartphones, the incidents are being widely shared across social media websites like Reddit and X. Now, a fresh report has revealed what might be the reason behind this.

According to a report by AppleInsider, a faulty component inside the iPhone Duo’s hinge could be responsible for some of the screen cracks. The publication points to a teardown by YouTuber CuriousHagi, who took apart a damaged device after testing its hinge mechanism and inspecting the damage.
What is Causing iPhone Duo Screen Cracks ?
According to an Apple Insider report, in several cases, the damage on the iPhone Duo appears to follow a similar pattern. The screen develops a crack along the crease, which then spreads horizontally towards one of the edges. While this might look like the display itself has failed under the stress of folding, the aforementioned teardown video suggests that a component inside the hinge could be involved.
During his testing, CuriousHagi exposed the iPhone Duo to dirt and put its hinge under stress by folding it backwards. When he tried to close the phone, it would not shut completely. He then attempted to open it from its partially closed position and heard a loud snap.
The display subsequently showed a large white mark extending from the crease towards one side. CuriousHagi then took the damaged phone apart to investigate what had happened inside.
Teardown Shows A Broken Hinge Element
After removing the display, the YouTuber inspected the hinge mechanism and found a broken component near the point where the screen crack had started. According to AppleInsider, the part appears to connect to an upper support plate.
The report notes that this particular hinge element is thinner than the components positioned above and below it, which could make it more vulnerable to breaking. The inspection also revealed heavy crush marks on a nearby part of the mechanism.
There was also what appeared to be an impact mark on the underside of the display. The suggested explanation is that the hinge component failed, broke away and struck the screen, causing the visible damage.
However, this is based on the examination of a damaged device and does not establish that the same component is responsible for every reported iPhone Duo screen crack. It is to be noted that the findings here talk about a possible cause, rather than a confirmed explanation about what’s going on.
So, if you own an iPhone Duo, avoid deliberately bending the hinge backwards to test its limits. If your device develops a crack or another display issue, contact Apple for assistance. If you want to read more about the issues people are facing with the iPhone Duo, read here.
