Koei Tecmo and Nintendo have officially revealed details about five playable characters coming Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which include four sages and Zelda’s trusted maid. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is being developed by Koei Tecmo and will be published by Nintendo exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 6, 2025.
While the upcoming title will be the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors spin-off series, Nintendo has revealed Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment will be the first title considered to be canon. The story will take place during the Imprisonment War, an important moment in the setting that leads into the events of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Many fans have expressed excitement about this new entry in Zelda’s timeline, as it’s likely that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment will provide even more context for the events that took place in 2023’s breakout hit.

After the game was announced, AAA studio head Yasuke Hayashi revealed that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment began development as a Nintendo Switch title. He claimed that the studio shifted its focus to the Nintendo Switch 2 midway through the game’s development, which greatly increased the title’s frame rate and the number of characters that could appear on the screen at the same time. Hayashi stated that the shift to the Nintendo Switch 2 even made the development of the title more fun.
Many fans were excited to hear that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment will take full advantage of Switch 2 hardware, as Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity often struggled to maintain a stable 30 frames per second, making for a choppy experience. From the footage that has been released, it seems as if this new title is able to hit a stable 60 frames per second. With the release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment less than a month away, players won’t have to wait long to get their hands on the series’ next action-packed adventure.
