Summary
- Robert Eggers is set to remake the high fantasy film Labyrinth, moving away from his typical horror genre.
- The new Labyrinth version is expected to use puppets instead of CGI, staying true to the original.
- Despite initial negative reception, the original Labyrinth has developed a cult following, prompting various attempts at sequels.
Now that Robert Eggers has seen the release of Nosferatu, it looks like the famed director has figured out what he wants his next project to be. Interestingly enough, while this next project isn’t a horror movie along the lines of Nosferatu, it does have some rather darker elements.
Eggers has an evergrowing list of movies and genres he’s worked in, though he generally takes on horror more than anything else. However, that horror doesn’t tend to be the slasher or straight up ghost story. His movies, like The Witch and The Lighthouse tend to be more of a thought provoking kind of story. Nosferatu is one of the most straight forward horror films the director has worked on, though even with that film, he managed to put his own stamp on the vampire branch of the horror genre.

Labyrinth Could Be Getting The Robert Eggers Treatment
According to industry insider Jeff Schneider Robert Eggers next project is going to be a remake of the the high fantasy film Labyrinth. It’s believed that Eggers will work with the Jim Henson Workshop, the company that put out the original version of the film in 1986 and starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Because Eggers is said to be working with Henson’s shop, it appears that like the original, this new version will include characters and monsters that are puppets rather than special effects or CGI. It’s also thought that this will be the first time that Eggers hasn’t worked on a project geared towards garnering an R rating.
The original Labyrinth was directed by Jim Henson himself and told the story of a 16-year old girl named Sarah (Connelly) who had to embark on a quest inside an ever changing maze (or labyrinth) in order to save her baby brother from the goblin king Jareth (Bowie). Along the way she enlisted the aid of various magical creatures and the movie had some musical properties, though it was not strictly a musical. The original movie is largely considered one of the projects that really gave Connelly her start in her acting career.
Henson’s Labyrinth wasn’t particularly popular among critics and audiences when it first hit theaters. However, over the years it gained a kind of cult following over the years to the point where it’s even had several people attempt to make sequels.

In 2016, it was announced that Nicole Perlman (whose writing credits include Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, Detective Pikachu, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) was hired on to write Labyrinth 2. Not long after, Fede Álvarez was hired to direct a new version of the film, with Henson’s daughter Lisa Henson producing. At some point, Alvarez dropped out of the project and Sam Raimi was tapped to replace him. However, the project never got off the ground. That could be a cautionary tale for the Nosferatu director, who appears to be in the very early stages of working on this Labyrinth remake.
