Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis posted an explanation on X today breaking down what the new (b) series actually means, after days of speculation following the brand’s cryptic teasers.

    What Akis Said

The explanation is straightforward. Numbers represent generations, letters indicate product segments. The (a) Series remains Nothing’s most premium line below the unnumbered flagship products. The (b) Series sits below that, expanding the portfolio into a new, more accessible segment.

“This avoids overusing suffixes and provides a clearer naming structure as the portfolio expands,” Akis wrote, hinting that more lettered segments could follow in the future.

What does (b) stand for? Nothing.

Its simply a continuation of our naming system. Numbers represent generations, while letters indicate different product segments.

What the Phone (4b) Looks Like

Nothing India’s X account has been running a series of teasers, and the latest one shows the outline of a handset with a “4b” pencil appearing at the end. A dedicated microsite is also live on Flipkart, confirming India availability.

From what the teaser shows, the Phone (4b) has a single rear camera unit, which would be a step down from the triple-camera setup on the Phone (4a) series. The transparent rear panel with exposed screws and internals is there, along with a flat back and rounded corners, keeping it consistent with the rest of the current lineup.

No specs, pricing, or launch date have been confirmed yet.

    Why This Is Happening Now

The (b) Series makes more sense when you look at what’s been going on at CMF. Last week, Akis confirmed that CMF won’t be launching a new phone in 2026 because of rising memory costs. His exact words: “We can’t build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF.”

To put it in perspective, he noted that if the CMF Phone 2 Pro launched today with identical specs, it would cost between Rs 30,000 and Rs 35,000, which defeats the entire point of the sub-brand.

The Phone (4b) appears to fill that gap under the Nothing name instead. Tipster Yogesh Brar had earlier suggested CMF’s ongoing phone projects were transferred to Nothing, and this seems to line up with that.
