Every year for seven generations, I have picked up a new Galaxy Fold and had the same first thought. Impressive, but the closed phone is still too tall, too narrow, and slightly awkward in a way you learn to live with rather than love.
This year, in a quiet embargo room in London, I picked up the Galaxy Z Fold8 and that thought finally did not come. What came instead was something I rarely feel at these events anymore, which is genuine freshness. Samsung has changed the fundamental shape of its book-style foldable, and after two hours with it, I am convinced this is the most important thing the company has done to the Fold in a while.
A New Shape Changes Everything
Let me explain what has actually changed, because the numbers undersell it. The Fold8 moves to a 10:16 cover screen measuring 5.5 inches, wider and shorter than the tall slabs we have lived with since 2019. It opens up to a 4:3 main display measuring 7.6 inches.
On paper that reads like a ratio tweak. In hand, it completely changes the way you hold and use this phone. The taller Folds were easier to wrap one hand around, I will grant them that. But in this wider format, your thumb covers far more of the screen in a single sweep. Typing, scrolling and replying on the cover display finally feel like using a proper phone rather than negotiating with a TV remote.
I loved this form factor, and I say that as someone who has spent real time living on the cover screens of earlier Folds. That outer display is where most of a foldable’s actual life happens. Closed, the Fold8 finally feels normal, and normal has been this product’s white whale for seven years.
The Moment It Won Me Over
Then you open it, and this is where my “this is the one” moment happened.
The 4:3 inner display nails a balance the Fold series has chased for years. It gives you a genuinely big screen without becoming so large that everything you watch swims between black bars. Films and games fill this panel properly, and content looks noticeably better and more immersive than on the taller Folds.
Rotate the device, and the same ratio becomes naturally suited to reading long articles and e-books, in a way that made me briefly forget I was standing in a demo room. Watching content and gaming felt practical rather than performative, while the multitasking advantage of a large canvas remains fully intact.
For the Indian buyer who watches a lot of video, reads a lot, and juggles WhatsApp with work apps all day, this shape simply makes more sense.
Light Enough To Forget
At 201g, the Fold8 is the lightest Fold Samsung has ever made, lighter than plenty of regular flagships on Indian shelves today.
My honest first reaction on picking it up? It felt light, slim and, for the first time in this product’s history, perfectly judged for a book-style foldable. There is no wrist tax, no sense of carrying two phones pretending to be one, and no mental preparation required before slipping it into your pocket.
No Compromise On The Spec Sheet
What makes this genuinely compelling is that the fresh shape does not come with a watered-down spec sheet.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy runs the show, the same chip as the Ultra. The 4,800mAh battery is the largest Samsung has fitted in this class of Fold, built on newer battery technology, with 45W fast charging on board. The main display hits 3,000 nits of peak brightness with an anti-reflective finish.
The new Flex Titanium structure promises better crease behaviour over time, and in my session the crease was subtle enough to ignore. The dual 50MP camera system covers wide and ultrawide with consistent resolution, dropping only the telephoto that the Ultra keeps, which for this phone’s audience is a sensible trade rather than a wound.
Dual Recording lets you capture both sides of a moment using the cover screen as a preview. My FanCam automatically tracks a subject and reframes footage for social platforms, something content creators in India will find genuinely useful rather than gimmicky.
The Timing Is Not An Accident
You cannot look at the Fold8 without seeing the shadow it is standing in front of. The foldable iPhone is coming, the supply chain has all but confirmed it, and Samsung knows the next twelve months will decide whether seven generations of a headstart actually count for something.
Launching a Fold that finally feels resolved, light, practical and shaped for real life, months before Apple enters the room, is Samsung playing its strongest card at exactly the right moment. Apple will launch its foldable to an audience that has just been shown what a mature one looks like.
Early Verdict
India pricing is yet to be announced, and I am judging this purely on how I felt about it in those two hours. On face value, after seven years of asking Samsung to make the Fold feel like a phone first and a party trick second, they have finally done it. The Z Fold8 is everything we (or maybe some of us) asked a foldable to be.
It fits right in the middle of the lineup, those who wish to save some money, don’t want a tall un-pocketable form factor, and love watching videos and playing games – you have what might just convince you for your first foldable purchase.
