There is a point at every Samsung Unpacked when the spec sheet stops mattering and the device in your hand starts talking. With the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, that moment arrived about thirty seconds into my session, somewhere between unfolding it for the first time and realizing I had stopped thinking about the fact that it folds at all.

I spent close to two hours with Samsung’s new foldable lineup at a closed-door briefing in London ahead of the official launch. That is nowhere near enough time for a verdict, but it is more than enough for a device to make a statement. The Fold8 Ultra makes a quiet, confident one, and that quietness is exactly what makes it interesting.

    The Thinness Story Has Matured

Let me address the number everyone will lead with. The Fold8 Ultra measures 4.1mm when open and 8.9mm when closed, making it the slimmest Fold Samsung has ever built.

Here is my honest take after holding it. Last year’s jump in slimness on the Fold7 (Review) was drastic, and it genuinely felt like a breath of fresh air. This year’s reduction, in hand, does not register as dramatic in the same way, and I would not expect more since it’s a little unrealistic in one year’s time to beat its own record.

But that is not where the achievement lies. Samsung made the phone slimmer while fitting in a larger 5,000mAh battery, up from 4,400mAh on the Fold7. That contradiction is only possible because of the new silicon carbon battery technology inside.

For years, foldables have asked buyers to trade endurance for elegance. It has been the single biggest reason many people I know admired a Fold in the store and then walked out with a slab flagship. On paper, this phone refuses to make that trade. If the real-world battery life holds up in my full review, that alone changes the buying conversation.

Still A Featherweight With An 8-Inch Screen

At 215g, the Fold8 Ultra weighs the same as last year’s Fold7 and less than several regular flagships sold in India today. That still feels slightly absurd to type about a phone that opens into an 8-inch tablet.

The 6.5-inch cover display is a proper phone in its own right. On a busy day, you could realistically never open the device and not feel shortchanged. But you will open it, because the 8-inch main display remains the whole point. This year it gets brighter at up to 3,000 nits with a low-reflection finish that mattered very little under London event lighting, but should matter enormously under the Indian sun.

    The Crease Is Losing, Slowly

Samsung already builds the best hinge in this business, so the generational difference here is not huge, and I did not expect it to be. The unfolding action, now supported by the new Flex Titanium display structure, feels as smooth and assured as ever.

What did catch my eye was the crease itself. It looked visibly shallower than before, to the point where I stopped noticing it on most content within minutes.

The honest caveat, and anyone who has lived with a foldable will nod along, is that creases are judged over months of daily folding, not minutes in a demo room. How this panel ages is a question only time can answer, and I intend to ask it in the full review.

    The Camera System

The camera is where the Ultra badge earns its keep on paper. The 200MP main sensor returns, now with HDR capture in full 200MP mode, joined by a new 50MP ultrawide that replaces the older 12MP unit, plus a 10MP telephoto.

I did shoot a few frames in the demo area, but a controlled event space with fixed lighting is about the worst place on earth to form camera opinions, so I am deliberately holding mine.

What I can tell you is that the creator-focused additions read seriously. 8K recording through the new APV codec and Cine LUT colour grading directly on the device suggest Samsung is now openly chasing the professional video crowd that Apple has courted for years. Paired with the expanded graphite cooling structure and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, the hardware foundation for that ambition is clearly present.

The new dual-path 45W charging architecture, which distributes power across the battery system for faster and more stable top-ups, rounds out a package built for people whose phone is both their office and their camera bag.

    Early Verdict

India pricing has not been announced at the time of writing this article, and I want to be upfront that the price tag might change a lot of things when it lands. For now, I am judging this purely on face value as a tech product.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra First Look

On face value, the Fold8 Ultra is Samsung doing what Samsung does at the top of its range, refining relentlessly rather than reinventing loudly. Eight generations in, the obsession shows in the details rather than the drama.

The superpower on this one remains the design, the upgraded battery, camera and above all the super mature OneUI for this form factor.
