It was only a few years ago that automakers were announcing their plans to transition to an all-electric lineup sooner rather than later. Except for Toyota, which is sticking to its multi-pathway strategy, a lot of car companies were confident they would give up gas altogether by 2030 or by 2035.

Well, that’s no longer the case. During 2025, a lot of brands backtracked on their ambitious goals, with some delaying and even canceling EVs that were scheduled to debut as early as this year.

All this being said, we thought it would be a good idea to keep track of all the EVs that were either canceled or delayed in the United States.

    • Porsche’s flagship electric SUV: Delayed
    • Ram 1500 REV all-electric truck: Canceled
    • Volkswagen ID.7: Canceled in the U.S.

    Acura ZDX: Canceled

After nearly two years on the market, Acura’s first production EV has been discontinued, with the company citing “market conditions” for the decision. The marque’s first battery-powered crossover was a joint effort between Honda and General Motors, which also spawned the Honda Prologue. Both the ZDX and the Prologue are based on the same underpinnings as the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Blazer EV.

That said, out of all the crossovers that share the same platform, the ZDX is the only one to be discontinued. Despite this, Acura’s smaller RSX electric crossover remains on track for a late-2026 debut.

Dodge Charger Daytona R/T: Postponed to 2026

The entry-level version of the all-electric Charger Daytona debuted to lukewarm reactions from the public and auto journos. A rather high starting price, coupled with so-so performance and hiked import tariffs for Canadian-built cars, led to the death of the cheapest electric Charger. For now, at least.

    Dodge Charger EV Banshee

    Dodge Charger Banshee: Canceled (reportedly)

The top-spec electric Charger was set to become the halo performance EV for Dodge, with an 800-volt electrical system, a multi-speed transmission and over 800 horsepower. A report from MoparInsiders, quoting an unnamed “supplier source,” claims the fastest and most powerful electric Charger is no longer a priority for Stellantis.

    Ford’s next-generation full-size electric pickup: Delayed to 2028

Codenamed “Project T3,” the electric pickup that could replace the current F-150 Lightning was initially scheduled for this year. However, Ford changed its strategy, delaying it to 2027, then to 2028.

    2025 Ford E-Transit

    Ford’s next-generation electric van: Delayed to 2028

The current-generation Ford E-Transit is getting a bit long in the tooth, so the American automaker has been mulling over a replacement for quite some time. A new electric van was announced back in 2022, when Ford said it would debut “mid-decade.” Well, that point in time is just about gone, and so is the company’s plan to replace the E-Transit as quickly as possible.

    2024 Genesis Electrified G80

    2024 Genesis Electrified G80

Genesis Electrified G80: Discontinued for the 2025 model year

The luxurious Genesis Electrified G80 was never a best-seller, despite its ability to waft the driver and passengers in supreme comfort and silence. Couple low sales figures with a new 15% tariff on South Korean-built cars, and you get the perfect recipe for the discontinuation of a luxury electric sedan. The Genesis G80 Electrified was refreshed for other parts of the world, and it could make a comeback to the U.S., but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Land Rover Range Rover EV: Delayed to 2026

The big, posh and expensive Range Rover Electric was scheduled to get into customers’ hands late this year, but a report from The Guardian revealed that the British automaker has pushed back deliveries to the first part of 2026. This way, Land Rover has more time to tweak the car for its big debut, while also hoping that enough customers will knock on dealers’ doors to buy one.

    Maserati MC20

    Maserati MC20 Folgore: Canceled

The Italian marque’s high-performance electric sports car had been long in the making. Based on the V-6-powered MC20, the battery-powered two-door was expected to debut this year, but Maserati pulled the plug because demand is nowhere near what it’s supposed to be.

That said, the Stellantis-owned Italian brand still has three EVs on sale today: the GranCabrio, GranTurismo and Grecale.

Mercedes-Benz EQE Sedan, EQE SUV, EQS Sedan and EQS SUV: U.S.-bound models on hold

On September 1, Mercedes-Benz paused the production of all U.S.-bound EQE and EQS models, without detailing how long the pause would be in place. The affected models include the EQE Sedan, EQE SUV, EQS Sedan and EQS SUV, despite some of them being built in the United States.

Cars built for international markets are not affected, but dealers in America have closed the order banks at the beginning of September, as confirmed by a Mercedes-Benz USA spokesperson for InsideEVs.

    2024 Nissan Ariya

Nissan Ariya: Production on hold for the U.S.

Nissan’s first properly modern EV, the Ariya, has been discontinued in the United States for the 2026 model year. While it’s never good news to see a car being discontinued just a few years after its introduction, the Ariya’s fate never shone very bright.

Despite its plush interior and mannered driving characteristics, the Ariya was a bit boring and a little too expensive for what it offered in the specs department. After the $7,500 federal tax credit for new EVs expired at the end of September, the Ariya became a tough sell for Nissan in the U.S., so the company decided to focus its attention on the new Leaf, which is one of the most affordable new electric cars stateside. The Ariya is still on sale in other global markets.

Nissan and Infiniti electric sedans built in the U.S.: Canceled

Nissan was planning on building a pair of battery-powered sedans at its factory in Canton, Mississippi, starting in 2025. That plan, however, was upended after Nissan found itself in a bit of a bother, bleeding cash and teetering on the brink of collapse after a failed merger with Honda.

“In response to recent changes in industry market conditions, we have decided to revise our plans for the Canton EV family projects,” Nissan said in a statement. “We have made the decision to cancel development of the LZ1F/LZ1E [sedan] projects and to reassess them as part of a new vehicle program.”

Nissan and Infiniti electric crossovers built in the U.S.: Delayed to 2028 and 2029

Besides the Ariya and new Leaf, both of which are manufactured in Japan, Nissan is working on bringing two additional electric crossovers to the American market. The two EVs, codenamed PZ1K for Nissan and PZ1J for Infiniti, have been delayed by ten months and are now scheduled to go into production in Canton, Mississippi, in November 2028 and March 2029 respectively.

    2024 Polestar 2

Polestar 2: Postponed indefinitely in the U.S.

Polestar’s first mass-produced EV is on hiatus in the United States because of its Chinese origins and the tariffs that go along with this predicament. The Polestar 2 was quietly removed from the company’s U.S. website earlier this year, and customers can only buy inventory units.

    Porsche electric SUV (InsideEVs rendering)

    Porsche’s flagship electric SUV: Delayed

The new electric Cayenne was supposed to have a bigger brother, but that’s no longer in the cards. The flagship SUV was meant to slot above the Cayenne, and it was originally intended to debut as an EV, but the German company said last month that the new model will initially be offered with combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

    2025 Ram 1500 REV

Ram 1500 REV all-electric truck: Canceled

After multiple delays, the full-size truck was finally set to debut in 2027, but it was ultimately canned in favor of a range-extended version that uses an electric powertrain and a V-6 gasoline engine that acts solely as a generator. After the all-electric Ram was canceled, the range-extended Ramcharger was renamed to Ram 1500 REV.

    2025 Volkswagen ID.7

Volkswagen ID.7: Canceled in the U.S.

The sleek ID.7 sedan debuted in Europe in 2023, and it was supposed to make its way to the United States and Canada in the second half of 2024. However, due to “the ongoing challenging EV climate,” the battery-powered equivalent to the Passat was axed in North America as we stepped into 2025. The car is still available in Europe, with a wagon body style added to the lineup at the beginning of last year.
