Why are All Umamusume’s Birthdays at the Beginning of the Year?

    Umamusume-Pretty-Derby-Umamusume-Cheer

As you might have noticed, all the horse girls seem to be born around March to May, with a few outliers from January to June. It turns out that this is because the Umamusume have the same birthdays as their real-life horse counterparts. In the Northern Hemisphere, horses have their breeding season in the spring, and they have a pregnancy term of 11 months. Since all these horses are native to the Northern Hemisphere, most horse girls will be born around March and April.

How Old Are the Umamusume Horse Girls?

According to a live stream, the creators of the anime and Umamusume: Pretty Derby revealed that the horse girls “age like elves,” which seemed to be a unique way of saying that the girls age at whatever pace best fits with the story of the anime. This was posited by a redditor named magolor98 when they pointed out the strange way that Umamusume seem to have growth bursts rather than growth spurts, and the girls basically never age.

    Umamusume-Pretty-Derby-Umamusume-Ages-Birthdays-magolor98

They also don’t seem to be connected to the real horses’ birth years or years that they began their racing careers, and they are not connected to the age that the real-life horse was when it began racing. Most real-life horses begin to run at around two or three years old, and they tend to retire around age 5, which aligns with the amount of time the Umamusume race in career mode. Overall, it appears as though the developers just made the horses whatever age they wanted to, and then made it so they will never get old or die.
