Google isn’t waiting around with Android 17.

Just two weeks after the first beta build dropped, Android 17 Beta 2 is now rolling out to supported Pixel devices. This isn’t a massive visual overhaul, but there are a few changes that could actually affect how you use your phone day to day.

The standout feature this time is something called Bubbles. But that’s not the only tweak tucked into this update.

    • Search Bar Design Gets Reversed
    • Privacy Indicators Look Different Now

A New Way To Multitask With Bubbles

The biggest change in Beta 2 is the new Bubbles feature.

You can now turn an app into a floating bubble that stays on top of whatever you’re doing. Long-press the app icon, tap the “Bubble” option, and the app opens in a small floating window. Minimize it, and it shrinks into a circular icon that hovers over your screen.

The idea is simple. You don’t have to leave your full-screen app just to check something else. On larger devices, there’s even a dedicated bubble bar in the taskbar to keep things organized.

It’s clearly built with multitasking in mind, especially for foldables and tablets.

    Search Bar Design Gets Reversed

If you noticed changes to the Pixel Launcher search bar in Beta 1, this update tweaks it again.

The earlier version removed the circular ring and leaned heavily into wallpaper-based colors. Beta 2 brings back the ring around the search bar. There’s also an AI Mode icon sitting inside the circle at the end.

    Privacy Indicators Look Different Now

Android’s privacy indicators are still there, but they look a bit different.

Earlier, when an app accessed the camera, microphone, or location, you’d see the icons inside a green pill shape in the top-right corner. Now, those indicators appear as separate circles. Location activity shows up in blue instead of green.

Functionally, nothing changes. Visually, it’s cleaner and easier to read.

    Other Changes You Might Miss

There are a few under-the-hood and utility updates worth noting.

A new Satellite tile has been added to Quick Settings. It shows the current satellite status right from the dropdown panel.

There’s also a redesigned “Accounts and backup” section in Settings, replacing the older menu structure that handled backups and passwords.

Google has introduced a new system-level contacts picker as well. Instead of giving an app full access to your contacts, you can grant temporary access to specific data fields for that session only. You can also choose whether the app accesses your personal or work profile.

Another technical addition is the system EyeDropper API. Apps can now request a color from any pixel on your screen without needing broader screen capture permissions.

Google has also added SMS and OTP protection. If an app isn’t meant to receive SMS messages, OTP messages will be delayed by three hours. This applies to WebOTP messages, SMS Retriever format messages, and standard OTP SMS messages. The default SMS app and certain assistant or companion apps aren’t affected.

Beyond that, Google says Beta 2 improves connectivity and cross-device experiences and fixes 16 known issues.

    Supported Pixel Devices

Android 17 Beta 2 is available for:

    • Pixel 10
    • Pixel 10 Pro
    • Pixel 10 Pro XL
    • Pixel 10 Pro Fold
    • Pixel 9
    • Pixel 9 Pro
    • Pixel 9 Pro XL
    • Pixel 9 Pro Fold
    • Pixel 9a
    • Pixel 8
    • Pixel 8 Pro
    • Pixel 8a
    • Pixel 7
    • Pixel 7 Pro
    • Pixel 7a
    • Pixel 6
    • Pixel 6 Pro
    • Pixel 6a
    • Pixel Fold
    • Pixel Tablet

How to Update to Android 17 Beta 2

If you’re already on Android 17 Beta 1, you can update through Settings > System > Software Updates > System Updates.

If you’re not enrolled in the beta program yet, you’ll need to opt in through Google’s Android Beta website using the same Google account linked to your Pixel. Once approved, the update should appear in the Software Updates section.

One thing to remember: once you install a beta build, rolling back requires a full data wipe.

According to Google’s release timeline, Android 17 will move into platform stability next month, and the stable version is planned for Q3 2026.
