After the Tesla Semi debuted in 2017, we were supposed to see tens of thousands of them on American roads in just a few short years. It was futuristic, it looked cool, and it had specs to match its looks. But the hype quickly faded after Tesla failed to keep its promises.
That doesn’t mean the demand for these vehicles has waned, however. Volvo Trucks proved that by recently passing the 5,000 mark for its electric truck sales. It’s outselling the Tesla Semi like crazy, and not just one model either. The company has eight for buyers to choose from. In short, Volvo Trucks just kept its head down and rolled up its sleeves to deliver what companies around the world have been asking for.
Together, Volvo’s portfolio of battery-powered cargo haulers has amassed 5,000 sales since the first model went on sale in 2019. By comparison, historical data shows that Tesla managed to produce approximately 140 Semis since 2022. That will probably change once Tesla’s manufacturing facility in Sparks, Nevada, becomes fully operational next year. But until then, these are the figures we have to work with.
Volvo Trucks said its electric trucks have found customers in 50 countries around the world, with the biggest markets being Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Norway and Sweden. The company didn’t provide specific numbers for each market, but it didn’t hold back when saying it is the leader in the heavy electric truck segment in Europe for the fifth year in a row, with a segment share of 47% and a total of 1,970 electric trucks registered. In the United States and Canada, Volvo Trucks’ share of the electric truck segment was over 40% in 2024, but the maker didn’t provide sales figures.

Volvo Trucks, which is part of the Volvo Group, is one of the most prolific electric truck makers out there. It currently has eight battery-powered models on sale globally: the FL Electric, FE Electric, FM Electric, FM Low Entry, FMX Electric, FH Electric, FH Aero Electric, and VNR Electric. Volvo Group also owns Mack Trucks, which recently unveiled an electric version of its Pioneer Class 8 tractor.
The latest generation of the FH Electric long-haul truck is scheduled to go on sale later this year with a maximum driving range of up to 373 miles (600 kilometers), thanks to a more efficient electric axle compared to the outgoing model.
