The developers of Assassin’s Creed Shadows have recently talked about the future of the game and the franchise, addressing elements such as the presence of the modern-day setting and the Assassins vs Templars plot. It seems that Ubisoft is far from done with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and the game may see the return of some classic plotlines in the future.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was a hit following its release earlier this year, with Ubisoft deeming it the series’ second-biggest launch, only behind the popular Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. While no official information regarding the total sales of the title has been shared by the developer, Ubisoft has revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows reached over five million players recently, pulling from data that also includes subscribers of the Ubisoft+ service who played the game.

Assassin’s Creed Has Not Dropped the Assassins vs Templars Modern-Day Story Yet

Now, some of the Assassin’s Creed Shadows developers have responded in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread on Reddit, sharing interesting details about the future of the franchise. Level designer Luc Plante addressed the Assassins vs Templars conflict in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, for example. According to the dev, the team first wanted to establish the protagonists in the new setting before expanding further into the familiar plot. The surface of the conflict appeared in a recent Critical Role episode focused on the series, and gamers can expect more of a deep dive into the conflict “in the near future.” The team also revealed during the AMA that AC Shadows will get more story updates in the future, so the conflict may likely be expounded upon in the game.

Luc also addressed one of Assassin’s Creed’s most controversial aspects: the modern-day storyline. He explained that AC Shadows is “putting in place the first stone of new means to deliver the Modern Day storyline with the Animus HUB,” and that Ubisoft is eager to hear player feedback. The modern day may not be the focus of Shadows, but it could be expanded at some point, likely meaning updates or other entries in the series. The AMA also revealed many other interesting details, such as the developers explaining that social stealth could return to the franchise in the future, or that some of the next games may use Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ changing seasons.

While fans speculate about the future of Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft continues to update Shadows. Last month, for example, the developer released update 1.0.7 for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The patch brought the eagerly awaited New Game+, raised the level cap from 60 to 80, made some balancing changes, fixed bugs, and more.
