He was young when he came up with his initial plans, so it became a restrictive art form for him. Isayama compared himself to Eren, whose powerful abilities ended up restricting the hero.
“It would’ve been nice if I could have changed the ending. I was tied down to what I had originally envisioned when I was young so the manga became a very restrictive art form for me, similar to how the massive powers that Eren acquired ended up restricting him.”
Isayama’s statement has caused quite a stir within the fan base. Those who liked the ending felt betrayed in the sense that Isayama himself wasn’t satisfied. Meanwhile, fans who were dissatisfied with the conclusion have a deep sense of regret that the author never got to change the finale.
