This article contains brief spoilers for the One Piece manga.
Of the many villains in One Piece’s rogues’ gallery, Blackbeard remains the most mysterious despite being introduced very early on in the series. As the end of the franchise draws closer, more of his backstory is slowly being revealed, although his overall presence and role at the end is still up for debate.
With that being said, it is known that Blackbeard is one of the most powerful characters in all of One Piece as the only person with the ability to use multiple Devil Fruits at once. In this article, let’s go over all of his most overpowered moments in the series and see why he is destined to be Luffy’s most challenging obstacle in the Final War.
One Piece: We’ve Already Seen Loki’s Devil Fruit Before
Loki’s Devil Fruit is the most anticipated in One Piece history, and we may have already seen it before.
Blackbeard Defeats Everyone At Amazon Lily And Almost Kills Boa
Shows How Dangerous He Is
- Blackbeard almost took Boa’s Devil Fruit.
Boa Hancock is known as the world’s most beautiful woman who is able to turn anyone who views her into stone. However, seemingly, this did not work on Blackbeard when he attacked Amazon Lily, which in and of itself shows how unique and powerful he must be in order to steer clear of such a broken ability belonging to the Empress of the country.
I’ve come for you, Pirate Empress!
The only moment of his that was seen here was when he used the Devil Fruit-negating abilities of the Yami Yami no Mi in order to incapacitate Boa Hancock and negate all of her abilities, showing just how overpowered of a character he truly is. At the end, he was about to take her Devil Fruit until Rayleigh made his appearance and scared him off the island. Still, though, even Rayleigh admitted that he wasn’t sure if he could have actually defeated Blackbeard.
Blackbeard Defeated Ace, Setting The Stage For The Marineford War
A Perfect Plan
When it comes to the most important moments in the modern-era of One Piece, the fated battle between Ace and Blackbeard has got to be among the top. Due to Blackbeard killing his crewmate to steal the Yami Yami no Mi, he was chased down by Ace in order to bring him to justice, an act which set the stage for the Marineford War and for Blackbeard to become a Warlord.
I’ll just prove to you that you can’t get away from the gravitation of darkness!
The battle happened offscreen for the most part, but it really tells of Blackbeard’s insane strength and intellect, since he managed to defeat a formidable fighter who had an incredible Devil Fruit as well as the ability to use Conqueror’s Haki. By defeating Ace, Blackbeard turned him in to become a Warlord of the Sea, which was also how he was able to eventually take full advantage of the Marineford War in order to claim the Gura Gura no Mi.

While Blackbeard is a strong fighter, does he avoid non-Devil Fruit users?
Blackbeard Defeats Law Due To His Strength And Tactical Brilliance
Blackbeard Took Full Advantage
- Teach showed strength and cunning.
Athough Blackbeard is incredibly powerful by every metric, the true reason why he is such a dangerous opponent is that he is willing to take every opportunity that is presented to him to get his way. He doesn’t care if the method to win is considered cheating or underhanded. As long as he wins, that’s all that matters. This was the most clear in his fight against Law.
The Blackbeard Pirates attacked the Heart Pirates after the events of Wano in order to take their Poneglyph Rubbings, and here, Blackbeard performed quite well against Law, who had Awakened his Devil Fruit. However, Teach still made use of his crewmates and dirty tactics in order to get the best of his foe, which worked in his favor as the Heart Pirates were seemingly destroyed.
Teach’s Betrayal Of Whitebeard Changed The Series’ Landscape
A New Yonko Appears
- The day Blackbeard became the world’s greatest threat.
As previously stated, Blackbeard is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, even if it means coming to betray the man who essentially raised him. The Marineford War was the perfect plan that Blackbeard had hatched that would confirm the defeat of the World’s Strongest Man, which he facilitated and participated in.
Navy! Allow me to show you my power!
Once the opportunity arose, Blackbeard’s entire crew jumped Whitebeard and killed him, allowing Teach to mysteriously steal the Gura Gura no Mi from his body. Through this, Blackbeard became the only known human who could use multiple Devil Fruit powers simultaneously, one of which was the world’s most powerful. In his first instance with the Gura Gura no Mi, Whitebeard managed to almost flip Marineford like Whitebeard did, showing everyone that there was a new contender for the position of Yonko.
