India has announced Dhruv64, a 1.0GHz, 64-bit dual-core microprocessor, marking the country’s first fully homegrown CPU. Developed by C-DAC under the Microprocessor Development Programme, Dhruv64 is aimed at industrial equipment, consumer electronics, and connected systems, with the goal of reducing reliance on imported chips.

Introduced under the Digital India RISC-V initiative, the processor is based on the open-source RISC-V architecture and is seen as a key step toward building a cost-effective, self-reliant domestic semiconductor ecosystem.

Dhruv64 Architecture, Performance, and Target Use Cases

Dhruv64 is built on the RISC-V architecture, an open and royalty-free instruction set that allows chip designers to innovate without paying licensing fees. This approach stands in contrast to traditional proprietary CPU architectures that often involve expensive and restrictive long-term agreements.

The processor features a 64-bit dual-core design clocked at 1.0GHz, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including telecom infrastructure, automotive systems, industrial automation, and consumer electronics. Like flagship CPUs such as Qualcomm’s Oryon cores that power Snapdragon system-on-chips, Dhruv64 is designed to act as the central control unit within electronic systems.

Microprocessors play a critical role in executing software instructions and coordinating hardware across smartphones, computers, medical devices, industrial controllers, and Internet of Things (IoT) products.

Reducing Chip Dependency and Improving Security

India consumes nearly 20 percent of the world’s microprocessors but manufactures only a small fraction of them domestically. A processor like Dhruv64 could help narrow this gap by supporting local development, manufacturing, and deployment. It also provides startups, universities, and enterprises with a common platform for both prototyping and scaled commercial products.

Security is another key advantage of an indigenous processor. Authorities point out that deploying Dhruv64 in defence systems and critical infrastructure could offer better visibility and control over design, firmware, and supply chains. This reduces reliance on opaque, imported “black-box” processors, whose internal workings and manufacturing paths may not always be fully transparent.

    Roadmap and Supporting Semiconductor Programmes

Dhruv64 is part of a broader Indian microprocessor roadmap that already includes Thejas32 and Thejas64. Future designs such as Dhanush and Dhanush+ are also under development, targeting different performance tiers and use cases within the same national ecosystem.

Multiple government-backed initiatives support this effort, including the India Semiconductor Mission, Chips to Startup, the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, and the Indian Nanoelectronics Users Programme (INUP). Together with Digital India RISC-V, these programmes provide training, fabrication access, and financial incentives for organisations working on processor and semiconductor innovation.

Dhruv64 in the Global Semiconductor Landscape

Dhruv64 enters a rapidly evolving global semiconductor market, where companies like Samsung are reportedly exploring 2nm chip manufacturing for AMD and preparing future processors such as the Exynos 2600, expected to debut in upcoming flagship smartphones. Meanwhile, Qualcomm continues to expand its portfolio through acquisitions like Augentix to strengthen its smart camera offerings.

Against this backdrop, Dhruv64 gives India a credible, domestically designed microprocessor option. While it may not compete directly with cutting-edge smartphone SoCs yet, it represents a critical foundation for future Indian chips, aligning with national digital goals and supporting long-term technological self-reliance.
