One actor who plays a villain in one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series admits that his dream role was to portray a superhero antihero from the DC Universe. However, Marvel fans should not feel bad because the actor also said he loved the MCU.
The MCU has a roster of actors and many of them love their roles. For instance, Tom Holland manifested his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When he was younger, Holland was asked about a superhero character he wanted to portray and he said, “Spider-Man.” However, one MCU star who appreciates his job is willing to join the DCU should there be an opportunity. And he already has a character in mind he wishes to portray.
Vincent D’Onofrio, who is best known for playing Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, in the MCU’s Daredevil, shared his superhero dream role when he took part in a Q&A at Dragon Con. Apparently, the character is from the DC Universe. “These days, I don’t know why…I don’t [know] if you guys are into DC like I am,” D’Onofrio said (via ComicBookMovie). “Obviously, I like Marvel too because that’s my job. My comic books when I was a kid [were] Captain America, Spider-Man, Swamp-Thing. Swamp-Thing. I would really like to play Swamp-Thing.”
It was not the first time D’Onofrio expressed interest in playing the green monster. When he joined a panel Q&A at the Fan Expo Dallas’ 2023 event, he shared his desire to portray Swamp Thing. When asked why he loved the organic and tortured DC hero, he gave a carefully crafted explanation. “That’s what I want to do. I want to do Swamp Thing. I have to admit it. . . . I wasn’t a kid with Swamp Thing, obviously, but it was a much later thing that I got into. I just think the way that character thinks and operates is something extraordinary,” D’Onofrio shared, per CinemaBlend.
D’Onofrio debuted as Kingpin in Netflix’s Daredevil in 2015. He also reprised the role in Disney Plus’ Hawkeye and its spinoff Echo. Kingpin is one of the supervillains and most violent in the MCU who continuously makes things difficult for Spider-Man. Despite Kingpin’s reputation, it’s also understandable why D’Onofrio wants to portray Swamp Thing — the character is not ordinary and undoubtedly a very interesting entity. It combines paranormal themes with superhero genres, which seems unlikely, but the combo is very effective.
Dr. Alec Holland is a scientist working on a bio-restorative formula who transformed into the Swamp Thing after a sabotage left him in flame and doused him with his own formula. The green monster covered with moss blends well into his natural environment and he becomes the protector of the green — the force uniting all plant life. It also includes horror elements and the lush and decaying settings of swamps and forests contribute to its eerie and gothic feel. The horror aspect makes the Swamp Thing unique and stand out from other traditional superheroes in the DC Universe. Fortunately for D’Onofrio, the role appears to be up for grabs. As the actor waits for an official offer to play Swamp Thing, he is expected to return as Kingpin in the upcoming Daredevil reboot.
Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on Disney Plus in March 2025.
