The Lyriq is Cadillac’s first mass-produced electric vehicle. It’s also the car that hit the reset button for the American luxury brand–and it worked. The Lyriq is a nice, plush EV with plenty of performance, especially in the recently revealed Lyriq-V. But there was always one thing that made the premium crossover feel a little cheap.
As with any respectable luxury automaker, the charge port door of the Lyriq is motorized–you press on it and it magically opens downward, revealing the CCS1 port behind it. But as we discovered when we first drove the Lyriq, it felt like our eyes were skipping frames every time the door went down. It was jerky and undignified for a company that wants to be the premier American luxury brand.
So Cadillac fixed it. But now there’s a new problem.
As discovered by The Drive during the Lyriq-V first drive event, the charge port is now much smoother, but it takes much longer to do its thing.
The opening mechanism itself was changed, according to Alex Doss, lead development engineer for the Lyriq-V. That said, all Lyriq versions made from the end of 2025 come with the updated opening mechanism, which means the last batch of 2025 Lyriq EVs got it. Of course, the 2026 model also comes with it.
The bad news is that people who have already bought a Lyriq with the old mechanism will be stuck with it, as this isn’t a software fix. Maybe if the charge door fails and needs to be replaced under warranty, the updated hardware will be installed at the dealer, but don’t get your hopes up.
