OnePlus has opened registrations for the ColorOS 17 Open Beta Test in India, allowing select users to try the upcoming software update ahead of its wider rollout. The beta programme covers five smartphones: the OnePlus 15, OnePlus 15R, OnePlus 13, OnePlus 13R and OnePlus 13s.
The recruitment window is open from October 9 to October 12. However, only eligible, unbranded Indian units can participate. Carrier-locked models, including those sold through T-Mobile and Verizon, are excluded from the programme.

OnePlus and OPPO have also confirmed that ColorOS 17 will launch in India and global markets on October 13. The open beta gives eligible OnePlus users an opportunity to test the new software before the broader rollout begins.

The ColorOS 17 beta is available for the following OnePlus smartphones in India:
- OnePlus 15
- OnePlus 15R

Users must ensure that their devices are running one of the specified firmware builds before applying. Devices running other software versions may not be eligible for registration.

OnePlus has listed specific firmware requirements for each supported smartphone. Users should check their current software version before submitting an application.

How to Apply for the ColorOS 17 Open Beta
Eligible users can register directly through their OnePlus smartphones. The application option is available in the device’s software update settings during the recruitment period.
Follow these steps to apply:
- Open Settings on your OnePlus smartphone.
- Navigate to About device.
- Tap the Up to date banner.
- Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Open the Beta program section.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to submit your application.
Registration does not necessarily mean immediate access to the beta. Once approved, users can download the update through the phone’s software update interface.
How to Download and Install the ColorOS 17 Beta
After approval, the beta software will be delivered through an over-the-air (OTA) update. Users can navigate to Settings, open About device and select the Download Now option to begin the installation.
Before installing the update, OnePlus recommends ensuring that the smartphone has:
- At least 30% battery charge
- At least 4GB of free internal storage
Users should also back up important files, photographs and other data before proceeding. Although regular OTA updates are not designed to erase user data, installing beta software can still involve risks.
ColorOS 17 Beta: Known Risks and Potential Issues
As a pre-release software build, the ColorOS 17 beta may not offer the same stability as a public release. OnePlus warns that some planned features could be missing, incomplete or non-functional in the initial build.
- Beta testers may also encounter the following issues:
- Unexpected app crashes
- Higher battery consumption
- Slower performance or interface lag
- Compatibility problems with third-party applications
- Temporary heating during background optimisation
These issues may be particularly noticeable immediately after installation. OnePlus explains that background optimisation can temporarily affect performance, battery life and device temperature.
How to Address Battery Drain and Heating After Installation
Users may notice increased heat, interface lag or faster battery drain after installing the beta. OnePlus says these effects are generally temporary and should subside after the smartphone remains idle or charges for approximately two hours with the screen turned off.
Users should allow the device time to complete its background optimisation before assessing its everyday performance.
Important Warning Before Rolling Back to a Stable Version
Users considering the ColorOS 17 beta should also understand the implications of returning to stable software.
OnePlus warns that downgrading to a stable build through a local installation package will completely format the phone’s internal storage. This means locally stored files and other personal data could be erased during the rollback process.
Anyone planning to test the beta should maintain a separate backup of important data before installation. This is particularly important for users who may want to return to a stable version before the public rollout.
How to Report Bugs in the ColorOS 17 Beta
OnePlus is encouraging beta testers to report bugs and other software issues to help improve the update before its wider release.
Users can access the integrated feedback tool by opening the stock Phone app and dialling *#800#. Alternatively, they can submit reports through Settings > Help and feedback.
Feedback from testers will help OnePlus identify performance issues, application compatibility problems and other bugs affecting Indian devices.
With the ColorOS 17 launch scheduled for October 13, the open beta offers eligible users an early opportunity to test the upcoming software. However, those who prioritise stability and reliability on their primary smartphone may prefer to wait for the stable release.
