June 12, 2025, has turned into one of the darkest days in recent memory for India, claiming multiple lives in separate tragedies. Just hours after the devastating Air India crash that left the aviation industry in mourning after taking 241 precious lives, Sona Comstar Chairman Sunjay Kapur passed away in England, dealing yet another blow to the Indian auto industry.
Kapur, a prominent industry leader and passionate polo enthusiast, reportedly lost his life during a polo match. Author and commentator Suhel Seth confirmed the news on X, writing: “Very saddened by @sunjaykapur’s passing. a terrible loss… Deepest condolences to his family and colleagues at @sonacomstar. Om Shanti.”

Respected by many in the Indian automotive industry, Kapur was instrumental in transforming Sona Comstar into a major supplier of high-precision automotive parts worldwide, especially in the field of electric mobility. With manufacturing facilities spread across India, China, the US, Mexico, and Serbia, Kapur turned Sona Comstar into a global powerhouse after assuming control of the business after his father, Surinder Kapur, passed away in 2015.
In addition to spearheading Sona Comstar’s growth, Kapur was an outspoken supporter of India’s inclusion in the global EV supply chain. Under his leadership, the company became a key supplier of EV traction motors, differential assemblies, and starter motors to some of the world’s leading automakers.
