NEW DELHI, April 15th, 2025: In April 2025, the Indian automotive sector delivered mixed results, with record passenger vehicle sales but a significant drop in E-Rickshaw sales, which fell by 36.5% from 1,350 units in April 2024 to only 571 units in April 2025.
In contrast, total E-cart sales increased by 16.6% to 280 units, from 267 the previous year. Furthermore, sales of goods carriers, which include both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles, increased by nearly 14%, reaching 9,758 units in April 2025 from 8,513 in April 2024.
The total monthly output for all vehicle categories, including passenger cars, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles, was 2,318,882 units. Domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 348,847 units, a 3.9% increase from April 2024 and the highest April sales ever recorded.
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon commented on the April 2025 results, saying, “The auto industry has effectively adapted to the new regulatory framework of the second stage of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) 2 for two- and three-wheelers, alongside the introduction of E-20 compliant petrol vehicles nationwide this month.”

Three-wheeler sales totalled 49,441 units, down 0.7 percent from the previous year.
In this category, passenger carrier sales grew by 2.0 percent to 40,167 units, while goods carrier sales fell 7.7 percent to 8,135 units.
Two-wheeler sales fell by 16.7 percent to 1,458,784 units from 1,751,393 in April 2024. Scooters sold 548,370 units (a 5.7% decrease), motorcycles 871,666 units (a 22.7% decrease), and mopeds 38,748 units (a 7.6% decrease).
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) attributed the decline to a strong base effect from April of the previous year and expressed optimism for a recovery in the coming months. The quadricycle segment suffered a significant decline, with sales falling to only 3 units compared to 19 units in the same month last year.
The data shared by SIAM includes Tata Motors but excludes luxury brands such as BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), and Volvo.
