A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 is as much a masterpiece as The Hedge Knight, perfectly adapting the first novella in The Tales of Dunk and Egg to television while fleshing out the story with original scenes that weren’t in the book. Unfortunately, even with the new scenes dedicated to world building and developing supporting characters, The Hedge Knight just barely has enough pages for its six-episode season.

By the end of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5, there are less than five pages less to adapt from The Hedge Knight. Unlike the good old days of Game of Thrones where the first six seasons all had ten episodes, this does mean that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 will end with Episode 6. Fortunately, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be releasing annually, so Season 2 will drop in 2027, avoiding House of the Dragon‘s frustrating release schedule.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Officially Ends With Episode 6
Dunk’s Trial of Seven is one of the very last events in The Hedge Knight, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5 already had to fill for time by fleshing out Dunk’s backstory with a show-only flashback showing his life in Flea Bottom, how he met Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and developing his relationship with Rafe, a character briefly mentioned in The Mystery Knight. All that’s left to adapt from the novella is Maekar learning about Baelor’s death, Valarr’s heartbreaking conversation with Dunk, and Dunk taking on Egg as his squire.
This will realistically only amount to roughly 5 minutes of screentime, if not less, so A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 6 will realistically add in new scenes with the supporting characters in order to wrap up their individual arcs. Raymun Fossoway will officially create his own branch of House Fossoways (the Green Apples), Lyonel Baratheon will have a new conversation with Dunk as seen in the next episode preview, and there’s a real chance Dunk will be hesitant to take on Egg as his squire in order to give the finale some drama it otherwise wouldn’t have.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Just Dropped the Greatest Battle in Game of Thrones History
Move over Battle of the Bastards, the Game of Thrones franchise has a new best battle episode after A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5.
The Dunk & Egg Novellas Just Don’t Have Enough Story For 10 Episode Seasons
Sadly, fans of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms should brace themselves for every season being this short. The novellas are not long books by any stretch, and both The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight are roughly the same length as The Hedge Knight in terms of page-count. Both A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 and Season 3 will almost certainly run for six episodes at most.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Actor Accidentally Spoils Dunk’s Fate in the Books
Peter Claffey might have to give Dexter Sol Ansell a clout on the ear for accidentally spoiling Dunk’s fate in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Since there are no more books written by George R.R. Martin, there is a chance the series will go on break following Season 3’s adaptation of The Mystery Knight, but George did give showrunner Ira Parker outlines covering all his future stories for The Tales of Dunk and Egg, so there’s a possibility the series will keep going. That said, outlines are even shorter than novellas, so the chance of any season past 3 increasing in episode-count is virtually impossible.
