China’s car industry is ruthless. Brands come and go, and only a few have managed to make a name for themselves and survive in the extremely competitive market. And now there’s yet another company that wants a piece of the pie–in a big way.
Apple’s smartphone-making rival Xiaomi has seen success with its car business, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Dreame Technology, a Chinese company with a reputation for making high-speed electric vacuum cleaners and robots, wants to take on the legendary Bugatti Veyron, according to CarNewsChina.
Dreame said that by 2027, it will build the world’s fastest car using similar technology to that of its signature 200,000 rpm motor. That’s a big claim, especially when it’s coming from an entity that has zero experience building cars. It’s also a little ironic that a newcomer would set the Veyron as the benchmark, seeing how Bugatti hasn’t built a new Veyron for a decade, instead focusing on even faster and more powerful models.
But while Bugatti won’t renounce its gas-guzzling engines anytime soon, Dreame wants to make headlines with an all-electric powertrain. “The luxury automotive sector has been missing a truly intelligent electric hypercar brand,” the company said. “While traditional ultra-luxury brands like Bugatti and Bentley have been slow to embrace electrification and intelligence, Dreame will redefine what constitutes ultra-luxury in the next automotive era.”
There’s no word on how powerful Dreame’s car would be, but one thing is certain: it will have an artificial intelligence (AI) companion that will supposedly learn the driver’s habits and adapt to them. Like other Chinese EVs, Dreame’s upcoming yet-to-be-named hypercar will be designed to integrate with the owner’s smartphone and smart home.
The company has already put together a team of nearly 1,000 people for the project, per Chinese outlet Iyiou, with some of the employees coming from both the automotive industry and the smart devices sector.
I, for one, will mark my calendar for the end of 2027. If Dreame’s plan comes to fruition, it will become the world’s first vacuum maker to make a production car. That’s more than one can say about Dyson, which scrapped plans of building an electric crossover in 2019.
