Bengaluru, April 09, 2025:
Greaves Cotton, in collaboration with Bengaluru-based Chara Motors, has established a partnership to integrate Chara’s expertise in the production of synchronous reluctance motors and motor controller systems into its manufacturing process.
Greaves will exclusively manufacture and assemble these motors and controllers at its advanced facility in Shendra, Aurangabad, serving both the automotive and non-automotive sectors.
Such innovations will be incorporated into Greaves’ diverse product line, which includes L5 three-wheelers, golf carts, and four-wheelers, as well as the future development of similar motor systems at its R&D facility.
Greaves stated that “Chara’s unique synchronous reluctance motors and controllers use rare-earth-free magnets, enhancing energy efficiency by eliminating electromagnetic losses and mitigating supply chain risks by substituting hard-to-source minerals.”
Dr. Arup Basu, Managing Director of Greaves Cotton Ltd., commented on the collaboration, saying, “Our alliance with Chara Technologies is perfectly aligned with our vision and long-term strategy to harness emerging technologies, thereby enhancing supply chain resilience and achieving manufacturing excellence in the electric mobility sector.” This establishes India as a major global player in the transition to cleaner mobility.”
The removal of rare-earth magnets from these components is expected to result in up to 50% energy savings and a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions due to the use of sustainable raw materials. According to Basu, this partnership will enable Greaves Cotton Ltd. to develop customized electric prime mover solutions for OEMs in India’s electric vehicle ecosystem.
Bhaktha Keshavachar, founder and CEO of Chara Technologies, stated, “Chara is dedicated to developing and delivering next-generation, rare-earth-free motor technologies.” By combining Greaves’ extensive industry knowledge and broad market presence with Chara’s innovative technology and product expertise, we see a significant opportunity to accelerate the transition.”

The global automotive industry is currently facing significant supply chain challenges, including disruptions, workforce shortages, a demand for alternatives to rare earth materials, and regulatory compliance issues. These factors contribute to delivery delays and increased costs.
Innovations such as Chara Technologies’ motors, which are free of rare earth elements, are critical in addressing and alleviating these issues, increasing supply chain agility and resilience. Greaves’ collaboration with Chara Technologies represents a significant advancement in this area, aligning with its mission to improve lives through its capabilities, scale, and network, informed company officials.
