In Grime 2, Stats shape the way our Smithed battles its way through the hordes of enemies found in the game. Health, Strength, and Dexterity could be easier to understand, but what about Diverging and Pliability?

That’s where things get really messy with the Stat distribution in the game, and as some equipment requires a specific Stat Spread to work, it is required that players understand each stat well enough to know which to prioritize as their character grows. Here’s a comprehensive guide on Grime 2 Stat System and distribution to help players decide which combat style suits them best.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Best Maelle Weapons, Ranked

For those looking to make the most of Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, here are the best weapons available to her.

All Stats in Grime 2 Explained

Grime 2 using Surrogate to Grow Stats

Understanding stats in Grime 2 is essential to know how to build our characters. So let’s start with the basics: Health, Strength, and Dexterity. These are three out of five core Stats in Grime 2.

    • Health is related to Hit Points. The more Health, the more difficult it will be for enemies to destroy our Smithed. And since the world of Grime 2 is filled with many environmental dangers and traps, Health is also important for exploration. A low HP bar will end up becoming our worst enemy mid-game, and having enough Health will save us a lot of trouble. So, invest at least 5 points in Health for starters.
    • Strength is related to Red weapons, those that require a lot of force to be wielded. These weapons are slower in comparison to Green weapons, but they cause tons of damage and cover a wide area with their attacks. They also have lots of different effects like knockback and stuns that are extremely useful for a brawler build. The more Strength players have, the more damage they will cause with these weapons, and they will also be able to equip certain heavy armor sets that increase their defensive capabilities.
    • Dexterity is related to Green weapons, mostly daggers, bows, and also hybrid weapons that scale with both Dex and Str. Having more Dexterity will logically increase the damage players cause with these weapons. A Dexterity build will result in prioritizing speed over damage, and safely delivering damage from afar, or even backstabbing with precise dagger power attacks.

Some weapons also scale with two stats, where one of them is primary (will offer more damage if focused on that), and the other will be secondary. This is represented as a white plus (+) sign over the Stat icon in the Weapon Description.

Now, there are two remaining stats to explain, but before doing that, players should take a look at the Growth screen on the Surrogate menu, and observe that there are various secondary Stats on the upper right corner (Health, Parry, Force, Burst Dash). These increase when the primary Stats increase (7 points in Health = 127 Health) and so on.

    • Diverging (Purple) and Pliability (Blue) are much more complex to understand, so let’s take a look at them step by step. Contrary to the three main Stats, Diverging and Pliability are also related to Mold and Talent effectiveness.
    • Increasing Diverging or Pliability will directly increase the damage caused by Molds governed by these two stats, and add an extra percentage of damage to weapons with their corresponding scaling.

Some weapons are considered Diverging or Pliability Weapons (players can observe their type by scanning their description in the inventory), but also scale on Dexterity and Strength. The Bloodmetal Scythe, for example, scales equally with all Weapon Stats, including these last two, and requires three points in Strength, Dexterity, Diverging, and Pliability to be used. This is for sure a complex Metroidvania.

Understanding Weapon Stats in Grime 2

    Weapon Stats in Grime 2

Weapons have three basic stats: Damage, Speed, and Paint Gain.

Damage is self-explanatory and increases depending on which stat we max out. For example: Adding more Dexterity Points increases by 0,6 points the damage Throwing Thumbs (or throwing daggers) cause.

Speed is the velocity at which players can chain combo attacks or launch projectiles with their weapons. The faster, the better, but oftentimes, faster weapons cause less damage, while slower weapons cause more damage in a wider area. Average weapons offer a good balance between damage and speed.

Lastly, Paint Gain is the amount of Paint earned per weapon hit. Paint is used to cast regular Molds. The more Paint Gain per hit, the better for those building Diverging or Pliability Molds since they will be able to cast them more often.

There’s also a hidden stat called Paint Cost, which is only included in each Mold. Paint cost is represented by small Grey Lines in the description of each Mold. The more powerful a Mold is, the greater its cast cost is.

All Resources in Grime 2 Explained

    Resources in Grime 2 Explained

Resource bars are those used by the main character in Grime 2 to empower its skills, regain health, and use molds. Force, Paint, and Breath Capacity are not considered stats, but resource bars. Let’s take a look at each of them in detail.

Force (the deep green bar) will deplete as players take actions like attack or move, but will charge with some particular actions, depending on which talents players invest in. Using attacks while stationary will result in more damage (represented as Green Damage), and attacking while the Force bar is depleted will result in Grey Damage. Special attacks (right-click) will consume more Force, but cause more damage than regular attacks, so that’s another thing to keep in mind while fighting. Force can be increased by finding special objects hidden in the maps and interacting with them using Grasp.

Paint (Grey Bar) represents our ‘magic’ energy, and the amount we have empowers our Molds, allowing us to use the skills of our enemies to battle. If there’s no Paint available, players cannot cast Molds, simple as that. Paint bars increase by defeating and absorbing the power of Strong Bosses in the game, which are mostly found while completing the main story.

Finally, Breath Capacity. This Yellow Bar represents the lifeforce of our Smithed, and the ability to regain health (by pressing E). Players can only heal when their Breath Capacity (1 Slot) is completely filled. Increasing Breath Capacity by interacting with Alveoli (special constructs hidden in the maps) will allow players to preserve another healing charge. So that’s basically the only way to heal during and outside of combat, besides resetting using the Surrogate, but that also (like in any Soulslike) resets the area and respawns the enemies.
