Following the launch and sales of Honda’s top-spec electric scooter Active e and value offering QC1, Honda Global, the parent company, has confirmed plans to begin manufacturing electric motorcycles in India in 2028.
According to industry observers, the facility will be located near its current two-wheeler factory in Narasapura, on the outskirts of Bangalore. In terms of form factor, Honda has already unveiled two concepts, the EV Fun Concept, Honda’s electric sports model, and the EV Urban Concept, at EICMA in Milan, Italy on November 2024.
The EV Fun Concept is Honda’s first electric sports vehicle, and it will go on sale in 2025. Beyond 2025, Honda intends to broaden the scope of its electric lineup in order to become the market leader in terms of overall ambition for the electric motorcycle category.
The EV Fun Concept is a naked sports model similar to a mid-sized internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle. Honda’s first electric sports model with a fixed battery will be available in 2025, the company has previously said.
The EV Urban Concept is an electric vehicle that represents Honda’s vision of urban electric mobility with its functional design, connected technologies, and in-house battery pack.
With the addition of the new sports EV Fun Concept and the EV Urban Concept, Honda has already announced plans to introduce 30 electric vehicles worldwide by 2030.
According to a Honda spokesperson who shared the global announcement today, “Going forward, Honda will modularise models developed exclusively as electric models and begin production at a highly efficient, dedicated electric motorcycle manufacturing plant that will become operational in India in 2028, allowing for further strengthening of the electric motorcycle business structure.”
Honda’s initiatives will make more affordable electric motorcycle models available to more customers, and in the future, Honda will strive to capture the number one market share in the electric motorcycle market.
Honda intends to capitalise on the growing demand for motorcycles by creating appealing products and an efficient supply chain for both ICE and electric models. As a result, in the long run, Honda’s motorcycle business, including both ICE and electric models, will establish a solid profit base with a global market share of 50% by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2031, said to company officials.
