Diablo 4‘s original difficulty system was the World Tier system, which would offer players a more challenging experience, though rewarding more XP and Loot. Overall, this system is still intact and operating mostly the same, though it has now been changed over to the difficulty system.

The general idea of the World Tier system is still there, offering players better rewards for playing on a higher difficulty, though there are now eight difficulty options to choose from, with four of them being available when you create a new character and four being unlocked as you progress through the game. Here’s how each difficulty level works and how to change difficulty.

Diablo 4: All Boss Loot Tables

Get that gear grind going with this quick cheat sheet for all the boss drops in Diablo 4.

How to Change Difficulty in Diablo 4

You can change the difficulty of your world anytime by interacting with the statue of Inarius in the town of Kyovashad. If you’re playing a seasonal character, you’ll have the waypoint to this town available right when you start. If you’re playing in the Eternal Realm, you’ll reach this town in about an hour or two of gameplay.

The statue itself is located just northeast of the Waypoint into town, and you can change the difficulty whenever you’d like. That being said, changing your difficulty will get rid of the following things:

Other than Nightmare Dungeons, the other two things listed shouldn’t be an issue. If you can go back and complete the Nightmare Dungeon before changing the difficulty, that would be best; otherwise, you’ll lose the item used to open the dungeon.

How to Unlock Other Difficulties in Diablo 4

There are four levels of Torment that can be unlocked as the upper four levels of difficulty in Diablo 4. Unlocking each new level just requires you to clear a specific tier of The Pit.

    • Torment 1 – Tier 10
    • Torment 2 – Tier 25
    • Torment 3 – Tier 40
    • Torment 4 – Tier 55
