The Onryo Armor is the very first piece of equipment Atsu has to her name in Ghost of Yotei. After killing off the Snake of the Yotei Six, she walks away with nothing but her horse and the armor she is wearing, which is called the Onryo Armor.
Unlike other armor sets in Ghost of Yotei, the Onryo Armor does not require any materials to be upgraded. Instead, the in-game tooltip states Atsu needs to “follow the Gold Ginkgo Leaf” in order to upgrade this piece of equipment. Some players may find themselves confused about what, exactly, this means. Here’s the breakdown.
How to Upgrade Onryo Armor in Ghost of Yotei
The Onryo Armor can be upgraded by completing Main Tales in Ghost of Yotei, meaning the missions that directly involve the Yotei Six. There are five tiers of Onryo Armor in total, and the first one is unlocked right from the start of the game. For the remaining four upgrades, complete the following missions:
- Main Tale: Saito
- Main Tale: The Oni
- Main Tale: The Kitsune
- Main Tale: The Saito Brothers
Ghost of Yotei allows players a lot of freedom in how they approach the main story, and you can tackle the Main Tales in any order you feel like. The recommended first target, for example, is the Oni, but there is nothing stopping you from going after the Kitsune instead. Regardless of which of the Yotei Six you choose to tackle first, once you complete a Main Tale, the Onryo Armor will be upgraded to the next tier automatically.

What Does “Follow the Gold Ginkgo Leaf” Mean?
Players may be confused when looking at Onryo Armor’s in-game description in Ghost of Yotei. It merely says “Follow the Gold Ginkgo Leaf,” the meaning of which may not be clear to players who have not been paying attention to the game’s terminology.
The Gold Ginkgo Leaf refers to the golden leaf icon exclusively used for the main story missions in Ghost of Yotei. “Follow the Gold Ginkgo Leaf” means the game is telling you to complete these Tales in order to upgrade the Onryo Armor. As mentioned before, the order in which you do so does not matter.
