Well, on the one hand, the release date announcement and reveal of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s third DLC, Mysteria Ecclesiae, has me hyped. Not only is this one of the best games I’ve played all year, but also quite possibly one of my favorite games of all time. Needless to say, any content the game gets, I’m sold on it way ahead of time. Unfortunately, Mysteria Ecclesiae is a bit of a double-edged sword for me, and playing through it once the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 DLC launches on November 11 is bound to be one of the most bittersweet gaming experiences I’ve ever had.
Perhaps you think I’m referring to the fact that Mysteria Ecclesiae is going to be the final DLC for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and that I simply can’t bear to see the game’s story come to an end. And if you think there’s a possibility of it receiving more DLC after this, think again. The announcement trailer for Mysteria Ecclesiae even called it the “final adventure.” However, it’s not the finality of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 that already has me heartbroken — it’s the conclusion of a much larger story that I’m having trouble coping with.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC Is Set to Conclude Henry’s Story
Yes, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC will conclude the game’s narrative, but it is also expected to close the book on its protagonist’s story as well. What that means is that, not only will the sequel’s story come to an end with the third DLC, but the overarching, more personal narrative that started at the beginning of the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance will likely be concluded as well. That story is about none other than Henry of Skalitz, who initially set out with the simple objective of retrieving his father’s stolen sword, only to find himself on a path of grief, revenge, justice, and self-discovery that has stuck with me for the last seven years.
Perhaps you’re thinking, “Won’t a new story for Henry just begin in the next Kingdom Come: Deliverance?” But I’d say that you’re in denial. See, the actor who plays Henry, the magnificent Tom McKay, posted on X back in August that he had just recorded his “final DLC 3 voice over session.” Now, alone, that suggests he simply finished recording dialogue for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. However, he goes on in the same post to clarify, “and so my last ever session for @KingdomComeRPG.”
“Last ever” — probably the two most heartbreaking words I’ve ever heard come out of Tom McKay’s mouth since I first heard his voice in the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance. If you’re still holding out hope that he’s not completely finished with Kingdom Come: Deliverance, let me drive the knife in deeper by telling you of yet another post by Warhorse Studios on X that showed the team throwing Tom a massive party and saying “Thank you, Tom — you’ll always be part of Warhorse’s history!” I mean, that sounds like a proper sendoff if I’ve ever heard one.
So, what’s the conclusion, then? I’d bet Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s next DLC, Mysteria Ecclesiae, is going to give Henry some kind of heartwarming (and heartbreaking) farewell. Currently, I have no idea what that will look like, and I dread considering the possibility that his story will end badly. After all, Mysteria Ecclesiae will see Henry investigating a mysterious outbreak — one that he is potentially subject to just as much as those he will be helping. And with the third DLC’s confirmed “unexpected endings,” perhaps players will get a chance to choose whether Henry lives or dies.
Personally, I’d love to see him eventually reunited with his romantic partner and then settle down on a quiet farm, maybe have children. For me, that would be Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s Katherine, who I know is old enough to be Henry’s mother, but I don’t care. Regardless of whether it ends well, though, after seven years with him, I still don’t want to see Henry go. Ultimately, this means the next Kingdom Come: Deliverance will likely feature a brand-new protagonist, and while I trust Warhorse to do a great job with whoever it is, who can beat Tom McKay?
