“It Was Getting Damaged and Broken Apart” Pete Hines Reveals Why He Left Bethesda

Former Bethesda executive Pete Hines has now shed light on why he chose to step away from the company, citing a sense that things internally were becoming strained. Bethesda is a renowned video game developer and publisher responsible for delivering some of the industry’s greatest RPGs, including The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises. The developer has earned multiple Game of the Year awards across its titles, cementing its place as one of the most recognized names in the gaming world.

However, over the last couple of years, the studio has seen a significant loss of several key figures, including Hines, who announced his retirement from Bethesda in 2023. He originally joined the company in 1999 as Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications and later rose to become the Head of Publishing. At the time, Hines said he wanted to pursue new interests and opportunities. Now, it seems like a combination of deeper problems within Bethesda also played a role in his decision to leave.

Pete Hines Explains His Decision to Leave Bethesda

In an interview with Firezide Chat, Hines opened up about his path into the gaming industry, his time at Bethesda, and the circumstances surrounding his exit from the company. He explained that his decision to stay for so long came from a belief that his presence was still needed. Over time, however, a break point emerged, as the authority to guide the company in the direction he felt was necessary began to slip away. As he was unable to carry out the responsibilities of his role, he chose to step away. Hines suggested that the studio was being “damaged, broken apart, and frankly mistreated,” a remark that likely points to the decisions made after Microsoft acquired Bethesda. In the end, staying on to watch the company he had devoted his career to deteriorate was not an option.

Hines further explained that he had done everything he could. He admitted he never wanted his time at Bethesda to end the way it did, but at a certain point, his “mental health was so deplorable” that he couldn’t go on. The former executive revealed that he had been waiting to leave after Starfield, and Todd Howard was the only person who knew about his plans. He praised Howard for stepping in when he was at his “wit’s end,” and helping him get out in a way that allowed him to maintain his sanity. This is not the first time the former executive has spoken out about the studio. Hines has also addressed the Fallout 76 Canvas Bag Collector’s Edition controversy, which continues to bother him to this day.

Even former Bethesda loremaster Kurt Kuhlmann has shared mixed feelings about the company’s recent trajectory. He stated that he was dissatisfied with how Bethesda evolved, noting that project leads shifted into managerial roles and stayed out of game development. Kuhlmann explained that communication issues and poor decision-making were plaguing the studio. The developer was also promised the lead design role on The Elder Scrolls 6, but the upper leadership ultimately denied him the position.

In light of these comments from former employees, fans over on Reddit and Twitter have grown anxious about Bethesda’s future and The Elder Scrolls 6. Starfield proved to be one of the studio’s most divisive releases, with many players questioning whether Bethesda can reach the high bar set by Skyrim. Even so, some fans still remain hopeful that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be a return to form.
