Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is scheduled for release later in 2025, with the game bringing fans’ attention back to the fourth season of Game of Thrones. Because of this setting, there are plenty of recognizable locales for players to explore. More importantly, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad has already begun to tease the roles certain iconic characters will play in the game’s story.
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad‘s official reveal trailer debuted during The Game Awards 2024, showcasing several established characters as they appear in-game. The Game of Thrones: Kingsroad gameplay trailer was released shortly after, growing even more interest in the game just before its first closed beta test. While there have been glimpses and insight, many fans may still have many questions about the narrative, the characters involved, and what’s going on in Westeros. Game Rant recently sat down with Netmarble Neo division director Hyun-il Jang to discuss this in detail.

How Game of Thrones: Kingsroad Developers Captured the Likeness of Iconic Characters
Although Game of Thrones: Kingsroad introduces original characters, it will also feature plenty of characters that have already been portrayed in live-action. Naturally, this saddles developers with the challenging task of adapting a real person’s likeness. Jang went into depth on how Netmarble not only rose to this task, but even took the next step towards capturing the essence of each character:
“The design team prioritized not only replicating the appearances from iconic characters in the show but also capturing their personalities and individual roles. Based on their on-screen appearances, we worked on the 3D models and carefully reviewed various animation scenarios to ensure they aligned with each character’s personality. We also refined details such as facial expressions to enhance authenticity. For example, we focused on portraying Ramsay’s sadistic expressions and his timid demeanor in front of his father to ensure these traits are effectively conveyed in key scenes.”
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad features an open world and a realistic art style, both of which could have made this challenge that much more difficult. The game’s trailers have already shown characters’ appearances captured in high fidelity, so Jang elaborated more on the design team’s priority for capturing each character’s personality. Of course, in-game footage of Kingsroad‘s story is somewhat limited at this point, but this attention to detail will hopefully be a good sign of things to come.
The Protagonist’s Relationships with Established Game of Thrones Characters
Game of Thrones is famous for its vast cast of compelling characters, and the complex political battles that ensue between them. Kingsroad promises to tell an original story but officially takes place during Game of Thrones Season 4. With tensions rising across many of the Houses of Westeros, Jang stated it was evidently the best time to place a compelling narrative. Then, Jang further elaborated on the role the player character will take in the conflicts throughout Kingsroad.
“The player takes on the role of the heir to House Tyre, a fallen noble family of the North. House Tyre has lost its glory, and the protagonist’s father lies gravely ill. To restore their house and fulfill their duty as a Northerner, the protagonist embarks on a challenging journey. Together with Jon Snow, they witness the terrifying threat of the White Walkers in the Haunted Forest. Unable to leave the Wall himself, Jon entrusts the protagonist with the mission of traveling across Westeros to warn of the looming danger and seek support for the North, all while striving to be recognized as the rightful heir of their house.”
Later, Jang referenced a prominent moment in the official reveal trailer, which teases a climactic encounter with Cersei Lannister. Players can expect to start with next to nothing, and slowly rise up the ranks as they truly begin to play the game of thrones. There will be plenty of struggles along the way, but Jon Snow is in a unique position to provide support to the protagonist. Lord Varys was also given a prominent role in the reveal trailer, which may hint at how he and other characters may treat the player during their journey.
