Monster Hunter Wilds’ Layered Weapons Can Atone for One of the Game’s Biggest Sins

Monster Hunter Wilds’ Title Update 2 is set to introduce layered weapons to the game, solving a long-standing issue for style-conscious hunters.

    S-Tier: The Ultimate Apex Predators

    Gore Magala (8-Star Tempered)

The unofficial king of Monster Hunter Wilds difficulty, this nightmare variant boasts over 55,000 HP, more than even Alatreon from previous Monster Hunter games. Its Frenzy virus can infect entire areas, and its winged-leg attacks can one-shot even the most well-equipped hunters. This fight is a DPS check and an endurance test that pushes even veteran hunters to their limits.

    Zoh Shia

Revealed as the true final boss following Title Update content, Zoh Shia now unleashes its ultimate attacks multiple times and represents the peak of the base game’s challenge. This monster has earned its place as the strongest regular encounter in the game.

    Mizutsune (8-Star Tempered)

Added in Title Update 1, the Tempered version has a difficulty rating of 8 stars. Armed with combat features like devastating tail swipes and spinning attacks, the Tempered version is significantly more dangerous than its regular counterpart, making it one of the most feared apex predators in Monster Hunter Wilds.

    A-Tier: Flagship-Level Threats

    Arkveld (The White Wraith)

The game’s flagship monster lives up to its billing with chain-whip appendages infused with dragon energy. Known for its ability to manipulate time and space, Arkveld serves as the final High-Rank story boss and requires Hunter Rank 40 to unlock. Its unpredictable battlefield alterations and powerful grab attacks make it a formidable opponent that many hunters lose to at least once.

    Jin Dahaad

Operating from a custom map designed specifically for its encounter, this Leviathan delivers devastating area-wide attacks that showcase truly spectacular destruction. As the apex predator of Iceshard Cliffs, it represents one of the most challenging 6-star encounters.

    B-Tier: Serious Mid-Game Challenges

    Rey Dau

Originally the most difficult monster available during the testing beta, this lightning-wielding Flying Wyvern only appears during Sandtide weather conditions. Its electrical attacks, foldable horns, and bladed wings create a relentless three-star difficulty encounter that serves as a significant skill check for progressing hunters.

    Uth Duna

The apex predator of Scarlet Forest, this massive Leviathan creates protective shells from water and secretions that can deflect attacks. Its water-based damage and ability to appear during Downpour inclemency make it a challenging early-game boss that tests hunters’ understanding of elemental weaknesses.

    Nu Udra

As the first Cephalopod monster in the series, Nu Udra brings entirely unique movement patterns and becomes particularly troublesome when enraged. Located at the peak of Oilwell Basin, its 6-star difficulty rating reflects the challenge of adapting to its unconventional attack patterns.

    Guardian Monsters (All Variants)

Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Ebony Odogaron, Guardian Fulgur Anjanath, and Guardian Arkveld all feature enhanced abilities through earth energy absorption. These ancient creatures can create explosive crystal structures, heal wounds over time, and are immune to exhaust attacks and dung pods.

    Xu Wu

This blind Cephalopod apex predator dominates Ruins of Wyveria, preying on Guardian monsters like Ebony Odogaron. Its golden mucus-hardened tentacles enable rapid slashing projectile attacks, while its exposed undermouth delivers a lethal lunge that can one-shot unprepared hunters.

Monster Hunter Wilds Collabs Wish List

Monster Hunter Wilds has the potential for more collaborations, and there are a few that would prove to be particularly memorable.

    C-Tier: Competent But Manageable

    Doshaguma

This massive Fanged Beast serves as an alpha predator with earth-rending attacks and pack-hunting mechanics. While its shockwave attacks and multi-hit combos can catch hunters off guard, experienced players find it surprisingly manageable once they learn its patterns.

    Blangonga

Leading packs of Blango in the Iceshard Cliffs, this High Rank beast’s icy breath drains stamina quickly, and its speed can overwhelm unprepared hunters. However, its predictable attack patterns place it lower on the difficulty scale compared to other 5-star monsters.

    Rathalos/Rathian

The classic Flying Wyvern duo maintains their reputation as solid mid-tier challenges. Rathalos’s aerial dominance and fire attacks, combined with Rathian’s ground-based fighting and venomous tail, create respectable 4-5 star encounters that remain manageable for experienced hunters.

    D-Tier: Entry-Level and Specialized Encounters

    Balahara

This electric sandworm provides a fast and dangerous fight, but remains relatively beginner-friendly. Its predictable dive patterns, rock perch behavior, and easily avoided corkscrew attacks make it an ideal introduction to Leviathan-class monsters.

    Chatacabra

With its adhesive saliva and rock armor, this Amphibian serves as an excellent tutorial for new mechanics without overwhelming difficulty. Its 4-star rating reflects a balanced introduction to Monster Hunter Wilds‘ systems.

    Congalala, Lala Barina, Gypceros

These returning favorites offer nostalgic encounters with updated mechanics but generally maintain their reputation as approachable fights. Their 4-star ratings and predictable movesets make them reliable stepping stones for progression.

    Quematrice, Rompopolo

Both Brute Wyverns provide solid learning experiences with their fire-spreading powder and oil-based explosions. Their 4-star difficulty ensures they remain challenging enough to teach proper positioning without becoming walls for progression.
