GrapheneOS, the privacy-focused open-source Android operating system, is set to expand beyond Google’s Pixel smartphones. The GrapheneOS Foundation has announced plans to bring official GrapheneOS support to select Motorola smartphones, marking a significant expansion for the security-focused platform.

The rollout is expected to begin with a Motorola flagship smartphone in 2027, followed by support for the company’s foldable devices. However, Motorola’s current smartphone hardware does not fully meet GrapheneOS’ stringent security requirements, meaning support will initially be limited to newer-generation models.

    GrapheneOS Support for Motorola Phones

According to the GrapheneOS Foundation, official support for Motorola will initially arrive on a flagship slab-style smartphone in 2027. The organisation plans to subsequently expand support to Motorola’s foldable lineup, including the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra.

If the plans materialise, the Motorola Razr Ultra could become the first clamshell-style smartphone to officially support GrapheneOS. The foundation also claims that the Motorola devices selected for GrapheneOS support could feature hardware that is more high-end than Google’s Pixel lineup, although they are expected to carry a higher price tag.

The upcoming Motorola phones will need to meet GrapheneOS’ strict security and privacy standards before receiving official support.

Why Current Motorola Phones Don’t Support GrapheneOS

The GrapheneOS Foundation says Motorola’s current-generation hardware is close to meeting its requirements but still has some shortcomings. The 2026 Motorola Signature and Razr models reportedly lack sufficiently mature support for hardware memory tagging and secure element integration.

Both technologies are considered important for GrapheneOS’ security architecture. As a result, the organisation expects Motorola’s next-generation flagship hardware to be a better fit for the operating system.

The foundation has specifically pointed to Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite platform as hardware it expects to meet its requirements. However, the rollout could take longer than initially anticipated due to differences in update and security support compared with flagship Snapdragon-powered hardware.

GrapheneOS Support for Google Pixel Continues

GrapheneOS has historically been officially supported only on Google Pixel smartphones, allowing the foundation to take advantage of Pixel hardware and software features that meet its security requirements.

The upcoming Motorola expansion will not replace Pixel support. GrapheneOS will continue to support compatible Pixel smartphones, with the organisation also confirming plans to add support for the upcoming Pixel 11 series.

The Motorola expansion could therefore mark a major step for GrapheneOS, giving privacy-conscious Android users more hardware choices beyond Google’s Pixel ecosystem while maintaining the platform’s focus on security and privacy.
