Intelligent Systems just surprised fans by dropping a new social deduction auto-battler mobile game called Fire Emblem Shadows. This asymmetrical PvPvE Fire Emblem title has three heroes team up to face the forces of darkness – all while one of the players is secretly working with the enemy.
Ever since the announcement of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave during the recent Nintendo Direct, fans of the tactics franchise have had a lot of reasons to be excited. This new main entry to the Fire Emblem series releases on the Switch 2 next year, and appears to take place in the same world as Three Houses and Three Hopes.
Fire Emblem Shadows – Mobile Social Deduction Auto-Battler
What fans didn’t know is that another Fire Emblem game was in the works, and it has now officially launched as of September 24, 2025, with almost no fanfare whatsoever. Fire Emblem Shadows is a new free-to-play mobile auto-battler and social deduction game in which three players team up to fight a field of foes. However, one of the heroes is secretly a traitor of Shadow destined to battle the others in the second round. If the Light players can successfully guess the traitor, they receive a buff in this conflict, while the Shadow player instead gains an advantage if they conceal their identity.
The story of Fire Emblem Shadows revolves around Prince Kurt, who is forced into exile after his kingdom is overrun by an evil empire. Tempted by Fenris, goddess of shadow, the hero’s journey unfolds over the course of two routes: the path of Light, in which Kurt tries to liberate his home from the empire, and the path of Shadow, where he instead seeks bloody revenge. The game stars a cast of original characters, as well as playable heroes and villains from several classic Fire Emblem games, albeit with a beastly spin. For example, Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade‘s Lyn sports horse ears evocative of Umamusume: Pretty Derby, while transforming into a beastly centaur when revealed as the traitor.
Fan response to Fire Emblem Shadows has been mixed so far. Some players say the game has interesting potential, excellent character design, and a unique gameplay they hope is further iterated upon. Others, like Redditor Hope_bringer, called it “under-developed,” criticizing the stylistic clash between character art and gameplay sprites, difficulty for the traitor role in the social deduction aspect of the game, and predatory Battle Pass-like monetization.
Regardless, with a tagline that says “Trust No One,” perhaps it is best that gamers give Fire Emblem Shadows a try for themselves and see how it is. This new Fire Emblem game may have received almost no marketing before its release, but it is fitting that it was shadow dropped in a way, given its name.
