New information from a technology journalist indicates that Meta is working on a new high-end Quest headset prototype. The new Meta Quest candidate could potentially be the follow-up to the Meta Quest Pro mixed reality headset.
The Meta Quest Pro had a rough time of it, delivering an excellent virtual and mixed reality experience, but at a high price point. The headset struggled to find an audience, and the Meta Quest Pro was ultimately discontinued. However, it seems Meta may not have shut the door on the notion of a follow-up.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Meta Quest Pro may have a successor in development. In a recent report, he noted that he has been informed that Meta is working on the Meta Quest 4, as expected, but also a “new high-end model” that might become the successor to the Quest Pro. No further details about the model were shared, leaving fans to speculate regarding what the high-end headset could be capable of. However, it’s also possible that this in-development model might not ever reach users, due to how Meta works on prototypes.
It was previously reported that Meta canceled plans for the Quest Pro 2 headset, leaving some wondering why another headset taking that role would be in the works again. There are some questions remaining as to whether the headset Gurman is referring to is indeed the same La Jolla project that was previously in the works. Whether it is or isn’t, though, the CTO of Meta previously explained that Meta has many prototypes in the works at any given time, and not all of them end up making the cut and reaching customers. As a result, it’s possible that only one candidate for a similar high-end release or a Meta Quest Pro 2 was slashed, and that others have been continuing through the development pipeline.
For the moment, VR and mixed reality enthusiasts shouldn’t hold their breath for a new headset to be released. The Meta Quest 3S is less than a year old, and the company likely won’t want to take attention – and customers – away from the Meta Quest 3, the current higher-end device. Even a Meta Quest 4 isn’t speculated to release until 2026. On the plus side, Meta often releases updates that further fine-tune the experience that its hardware is capable of delivering, so the Meta Quest 3 may see some mild upgrades in performance over the course of the next two years.
