Carl Pei has confirmed that “some products” arriving before the end of March will feature UFS 3.1 storage, hinting at upgrades for the Nothing Phone 4a family, though the specific models receiving faster storage are still not clearly identified.
Nothing has not yet revealed full hardware lists for the expected Nothing Phone (4a) range, but the timing mirrors last year, when the Nothing Phone (3a) and Nothing Phone (3a) Pro appeared in early March, making their successors the most likely candidates.
Nothing Phone (4a) storage upgrade and past UFS decisions
The current Nothing Phone (3a) and Nothing Phone (3a) Pro use UFS 2.2 storage, a move the firm previously defended by saying it was not “about cutting costs, but about putting resources where they matter most”, even as rivals pushed faster UFS versions.
At that time, Nothing also argued that “UFS 3.1 sounds great on paper, but in everyday use, its benefits are often marginal compared to optimizations in software, battery life, and display quality”, a stance that clashes with the new push towards UFS 3.1 storage.
Nothing Phone (4a) pricing pressures and specs trade-offs
Pei now links the coming Nothing Phone 4a choices to rising component costs, saying brands face “a simple choice” as RAM prices jump due to AI data centre spending, either to “raise prices, by 30% or more in some cases, or downgrade specs”.
According to Pei, “the more specs for less money model that many value brands were built on is no longer sustainable in 2026”, which suggests the Nothing Phone (4a) devices may either drop some features versus the 3a line or see price hikes approaching 30 percent.
Nothing Phone (4a) strategy and user experience claims
Pei presents this environment as favourable for Nothing, saying the company moved early from a specs race towards “perfecting the user experience, proving that how a phone looks and feels matters far more than its raw numbers”, even though sales lag behind larger smartphone makers.
For reference, current Nothing Phone (3a) pricing in Europe shows the 128GB storage and 8GB RAM model listed at €283.44, while the variant with 256GB storage and 12GB RAM sits higher at €332.76, setting a baseline for any Nothing Phone (4a) adjustments.
The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro is positioned above that, with the 256GB storage and 12GB RAM configuration available at €349.00, and any UFS 3.1 upgrade or broader component inflation for the Nothing Phone (4a) series is likely to be judged against these existing figures.
Nothing has therefore set expectations that the Nothing Phone (4a) line will bring at least some UFS 3.1 storage, but buyers should also be prepared for either trimmed specifications or noticeably higher launch prices when compared with the current Nothing Phone (3a) and Nothing Phone (3a) Pro.
