The OnePlus 15 (review) only launched in late October, but leaks around its successor are already starting to surface. Over the past few days, we’ve seen early chatter about camera upgrades on the OnePlus 16. Now, a new leak shifts the focus to the display, and it hints at something we haven’t really seen on phones before.

According to the latest report, OnePlus is testing a display with a refresh rate of at least 200Hz for its next flagship.

Details are still thin, but the claim is straightforward. OnePlus has reportedly begun internal testing on a screen that goes beyond the usual 120Hz territory. The exact number isn’t mentioned. A 240Hz panel would be the obvious next step, but for now, all that’s being suggested is 200Hz or higher.

Even hitting 200Hz would put the OnePlus 16 in a category of its own. Most flagship phones today sit comfortably at 120Hz, with a handful pushing slightly beyond that. Crossing the 200Hz mark would be a first for mainstream smartphones.

The Real Question Is Practical Use

As exciting as the number sounds, the real-world benefit is still up for debate. Most apps and mobile games don’t even take full advantage of 120Hz displays yet. That raises the question of how often a 200Hz screen would actually be used.

That said, if OnePlus allows users to force higher refresh rates across system animations and supported apps, the phone could feel noticeably smoother in everyday use. If it’s limited to select scenarios, the impact may be more subtle.

Battery Tech Might Make This Possible

One reason this rumor doesn’t feel completely unrealistic is recent progress in battery technology. Newer silicon-carbon batteries are allowing brands to increase capacity without dramatically increasing size. If OnePlus pairs a high refresh rate panel with smarter refresh rate scaling, battery drain might not be as big a concern as it once was.

Of course, that balance will matter a lot. A 200Hz display only makes sense if it doesn’t come at the cost of everyday battery life.

Very Early Days for the OnePlus 16

It’s worth stressing that this is still an early leak. Display testing doesn’t guarantee a final feature, and plans can change before a phone actually launches. Still, the fact that OnePlus is experimenting with refresh rates this high suggests it’s looking for ways to push hardware boundaries again.
