Over the course of fourteen main installments, numerous spin-offs, and other media tie-ins, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise has taken fans to the far corners of the Earth across various time periods. Assassin’s Creed continues to chug along as it tells the grand tale of the conflict between the Templars and the Brotherhood, while the remnants of the advanced Precursor civilization that started it all lurk behind the scenes and manipulate events to their own enigmatic ends.

With no signs of slowing down, and the studio constantly looking to one-up itself and surprise players with each entry, there are a couple of promising locations and periods that Assassin’s Creed hasn’t yet used but would be great to see in future games. Some of these have already been suggested by the fandom, while others could provide a good way to bridge some narrative gaps by setting a story in another region concurrently to a previous plot.

Rumor: Assassin’s Creed to Release Nine Games in the Next Six Years

A new rumor suggests the Assassin’s Creed series could have up to nine games in development for release over the next six years.

Predicting When and Where Assassin’s Creed Might Go Next

    Ancient Rome

The most recent release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, took fans to feudal Japan, a period and setting that had long been requested. Another that often tops the list of desired ones is a title set during the height (or decline) of the Roman Empire. With this being a highly popular one, it could lead to an entry like AC Odyssey in terms of fertile ground for intricate intrigue and the series’ trademark style in bringing widely recognized historical worlds to life.

Odyssey featured or referenced the famous historical figures of Brutus, Cassius, Cleopatra, and Pompey, all of whom have connections to the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, likely the most well-known person of the time. If Shadows is any sign that Ubisoft is indeed taking fan feedback into consideration when deciding where to take them next, ancient Rome may well be a good potential bet.

Age of Exploration-Era Portugal or Spain

The Age of Exploration was about a century or so before the events of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and this direction would open the possibility to seamlessly tie into it. Shadows‘ Templars were shown to have connections to the Portuguese regime, and it’s revealed in a flashback that Spanish assassin Alvaro Catarribera was responsible for initiating Naoe’s mother, Tsuyu, into the creed. A title set during this period could thus explore Alvaro’s exploits and further flesh out the history leading into Shadows. Fans may also recall a detail in the 2016 Assassin’s Creed movie (starring Michael Fassbender) where Christopher Columbus was mentioned as being connected to the Assassin order. While the film is not necessarily canon, Ubisoft could easily decide to make at least parts of it so, and further delve into this thread.

Notably, the next upcoming entry, known as Assassin’s Creed Hexe, will seemingly be set in the Holy Roman Empire during the late 1500s/early 1600s Central Europe in Germania. This could either overlap with or be shortly after Shadows, focusing on what was occurring in the Western half of the world towards the tail end or the aftermath of Yasuke and Naoe’s adventure. An Assassin’s Creed taking place during the Age of Exploration then might potentially create a self-contained arc of sorts, similar to the series’ Ezio or North Atlantic sagas.

    Turn-of-the-Century America

The most modern period players have been to so far is in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, set during England’s Industrial Revolution of the latter half of the 1800s. Ubisoft could go a little past this and into one of the most popular periods in many forms of media–the twilight days of the American Wild West. In this case and given the framework, a good design might be something like Red Dead Redemption 2‘s Saint Denis (though technically it was based on New Orleans.) An Assassin’s Creed in this vein could take notes from Mirage or Revelations, placing fans in one large major location instead of a massive open world composed of multiple territories.

AC Syndicate contains a brief optional section in World War 1.

Though Ubisoft is unlikely to reveal exactly where or when the next games’ stories will be until they’re ready, the above can still serve as solid choices. Each of the listed potential settings and timelines is as yet unexplored, and would all be excellent starting points to bring Assassin’s Creed fans to exciting new places and periods while building upon existing plots and characters.
