Flip phones have always sold on charm, and the Galaxy Z Flip series has never lacked it. Walk into any Samsung store in India and watch people interact with the display units. The Flip is the one that makes strangers smile, fold it, unfold it, and take a mirror selfie they did not plan to take.
What the series has lacked, generation after generation, is completeness. There was always an asterisk, usually hovering around the cover screen’s usefulness or the battery’s stamina, that kept it from being an easy recommendation over a conventional flagship at the same price.
After spending time with the Galaxy Z Flip8 at Samsung’s pre-launch briefing in London, I think that asterisk is finally gone. This is the Flip growing up without losing what made it likeable in the first place.
The Design Did Not Need Fixing
Let me start with what has not changed much, because it tells you something about Samsung’s confidence. Design, looks and feel were never a shortcoming on this series, and the company clearly knows it.
The Flip8 is the sleekest and lightest Flip yet, measuring just 6.1mm when unfolded and weighing 180g. In hand, it feels almost implausibly compact for something hiding a 6.9-inch main display inside. Folded, it disappears into a jeans pocket or a small handbag in a way no slab flagship can dream of.
If I have one honest note from my time with it, it is that I would have loved some more flavour in the design language itself. It is beautiful, but it is familiar, and a phone built explicitly for self-expression could afford to take a bigger visual swing.
Perhaps that is the point though. When your baseline is already the best-looking flip phone in the market, restraint is a luxury you can afford.
The FlexWindow Is The Real Story
The real makeover lives on the front. The 4.1-inch FlexWindow is the largest cover screen the Flip has carried, and Samsung has rebuilt it as what it calls an AI-native interface rather than a glorified notification tray.
Apps, insights and actions now live directly on the cover screen. Now Brief sits on the FlexWindow home, surfacing timely information and next steps through the day. Gemini-powered automation across more than 40 apps and services can be triggered straight from the cover through the side key or a voice request, letting you finish small tasks without ever opening the phone.
Full disclosure, my session did not allow time to properly test these AI experiences, so my read on them is strictly on paper for now. I will reserve judgement on how natural they feel until the full review.
But the direction is unquestionably right. The cover screen has always been the Flip’s defining feature, and treating it as the phone’s brain rather than a widget shelf is exactly the evolution this format has been waiting for. For the buyer who wants to check, reply and move on without doomscrolling, this could quietly become the healthiest phone habit money can buy.
The Quiet Fix Nobody Will Make Reels About
Battery capacity climbs to 4,300mAh, backed by newer battery technology, inside a body that is somehow slimmer than before. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy handles efficiency duties.
Battery anxiety has been the Flip’s oldest weakness, the fine print that made buyers admire it and then purchase something safer. A bigger battery and better battery technology in a thinner frame is Samsung attacking its most persistent criticism head-on.
How the stamina holds up through an Indian workday of network juggling, navigation and Instagram is a review question. But the intent here is unmistakable, and overdue.
Still The Best Selfie Machine In Any Format
The camera story stays true to what makes this format special. The 50MP main camera with ProVisual Engine anchors what remains the best selfie experience on any phone, full stop. Nothing on a slab replicates shooting your selfies with the main camera while using the cover screen as a viewfinder.
Flex Mode turns the half-folded phone into its own tripod for hands-free shots. The new Camcorder Grip with Zoom Rocker makes half-folded video capture feel like holding an old camcorder, in the best way. Super Steady now adds a Horizontal Lock for smoother footage on the move.
FlipShot and the new Mirror view lean further into the vanity-mirror use case that Flip owners genuinely love and everyone else pretends not to. For young buyers who live on Instagram Reels, this phone is quietly a content creation kit that fits in a palm and still doesn’t compromise on raw power.
Early Verdict
India pricing has not been announced yet, and that number will decide how loudly I can recommend this. In my limited experience, the Flip8 reads like the first Flip without a hole in its story. The screens are right, the thinness is right, the cover display has way more to offer beyond notifications, and the battery is no longer the fine print.
The best flip phone in the market did not need a reinvention. It needed to finish the job, and from what I have seen, it seems to have moved ahead in that direction.
